The cost of replacing a BMW engine depends on three things: the price of the engine, the labour to fit it and the parts that should be replaced at the same time. Owners are often quoted a single number without knowing how it was built.
This guide shows real price ranges for every BMW engine family currently in our Hamburg stock, explains typical fitting times and lists the parts worth replacing while the engine is out.

The three parts of the bill
The engine itself is usually the largest part of the cost. Used engines from our stock range from under a thousand euros for common four-cylinders to many thousands for M engines and V8s.
Labour depends on the car. A four-cylinder rear-drive BMW takes eight to twelve hours; a V8 or an xDrive SUV can take twenty or more. Rates vary from around 60 euros an hour at independent garages to more than 150 at main dealers.
Parts to replace while the engine is out — clutch, flywheel, seals, belts, water pump, mounts — usually add a few hundred euros and prevent a second engine-out job.
How to keep the total down
Buy from a supplier who tells you exactly what is fitted to the engine so you are not paying for ancillaries twice. Ask your garage to quote for the job with your engine, and agree in advance which parts will be replaced.
Choose a low-mileage donor where possible; the price difference is often small compared with the life you gain.

Engine by engine: price, labour and parts
M10 (1962–1988)
The M10 is the engine that saved BMW. Launched in 1962 in the Neue Klasse saloon, this cast-iron four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft went on to power the 02 Series, the first 3 and 5 Series, and — in turbocharged form — the Formula One engine that won the 1983 world title.
We do not have an M10 on the shelf right now; ask the desk for the next arrival and price.
Parts to replace while it is out: Valve clearance is adjusted cold with eccentric adjusters on the rocker arms. Fit a new spray bar if the old one is blocked or loose.

M20 (1977–1993)
The M20 is BMW's small straight-six, built from 1977 to 1993 for the E21, E30, E12, E28 and E34. It is the engine behind the E30 325i and the economical 'eta' 2.7, and it is why so many people still describe a BMW six as smooth.
We do not have an M20 on the shelf right now; ask the desk for the next arrival and price.
Parts to replace while it is out: Valve clearance is set cold at about 0.25 mm with eccentric adjusters. Use a new head bolt set whenever the head comes off.

M30 (1968–1994)
The M30 is the 'Big Six', the straight-six that powered BMW's large cars for more than a quarter of a century. It went into the E3, E9, E12, E23, E24, E28, E32 and E34, and its 3.5 litre version drove the M535i and 635CSi.
We do not have an M30 on the shelf right now; ask the desk for the next arrival and price.
Parts to replace while it is out: Valve clearances are set with eccentric adjusters at about 0.30 mm cold. Keep the cooling system fresh and the fan clutch healthy.

M40 (1987–1994)
The M40 is the belt-driven four-cylinder that replaced the M10 in the E30 316i and 318i from 1987, then went on into the early E36 and the E34 518i. It is a quiet, economical engine that kept BMW's entry-level cars on the road through the early 1990s.
We do not have an M40 on the shelf right now; ask the desk for the next arrival and price.
Parts to replace while it is out: Because cam wear is common, a new camshaft and rockers are a sensible addition when a used M40 is fitted.

M42 and M44 (1989–2000)
The M42 was BMW's first sixteen-valve four-cylinder for road cars, and it gave the E30 318is its free-revving character. The M44, its 1.9 litre successor, carried the same spirit into the E36 318is, 318ti and Z3 1.9.
We hold 51 M42 and M44 engines from 1.107,00 € to 7.976,00 €, median 6.459,00 €. Fitting a four- or three-cylinder typically takes 8 to 12 workshop hours.
Parts to replace while it is out: Hydraulic lifters mean no valve adjustment, but they need clean oil of the right viscosity to stay quiet.

M43 (1993–2002)
The M43 is the economical eight-valve four-cylinder that powered the E36 316i and 318i, the E46 316i and 318i, the Z3 1.8 and the E34 518i. It replaced the belt-driven M40 with a chain-driven design.
We do not have an M43 on the shelf right now; ask the desk for the next arrival and price.
Parts to replace while it is out: Replace the guide rail, tensioner and valve cover gasket before fitting a used M43. It is a small job with the engine out.

Questions buyers ask
How much does a used BMW M57D30TU2 engine cost?
A used BMW M57D30TU2 engine in our yard usually costs between 2.500 € and 3.950 €. The exact price depends on the year, the mileage and the parts that come with the engine.
Our units show recorded mileage from about 22,000 km up to around 200,000 km. Lower mileage and more ancillaries mean a higher price. Each listing shows its own price, and the price you see is the price you pay. Prices include VAT for private buyers.
Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. If you order a gearbox or a second engine on the same order, the fee is still charged once.
Inside the EU there is no import duty. For the UK and other non-EU countries, import duty and local VAT are paid by the receiver, and we supply a commercial invoice.

Delivery, warranty and payment
Every engine we sell is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped before it leaves Hamburg. You receive photographs of the packed engine and a tracking number.
Delivery is door to door and included in the price. Most European addresses receive the engine within five to ten working days; Germany and its neighbours are usually faster.
Every engine carries a 12-month warranty on eligible internal failure when a qualified workshop fits it with new fluids and filters. Payment is by card, bank transfer or crypto; your invoice is emailed as soon as you order.

Glossary
- VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
- Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
- Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
- Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
- DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
- EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
- Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
- Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
- Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
- Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
- Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
- Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
- LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
- xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
- DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
- CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
- Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
- ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
- Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
- Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
- Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
- TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.
Browse every engine in stock or ask the Hamburg desk — send your VIN and we will confirm the right engine the same day.
