The N54 is BMW's first twin-turbo petrol straight-six and the engine that made the E90 335i and E82 135i legends among tuners. It also powered the E60 535i, the E92 and E93 335i, the E89 Z4 sDrive35i and 35is, the F01 740i and the 1 Series M Coupé.
It is strong underneath and responds dramatically to tuning, but its fuel system, turbos and water pump have known faults. Buyers should look for engines with updated injectors and good service history.

History of the N54
BMW launched the N54 in 2006 with two small turbochargers, piezo direct injection, double VANOS and an aluminium block with a closed deck. It won International Engine of the Year several times. The single-turbo N55 replaced it from 2009, though it continued in the Z4 and 1M until 2016.
2006: the N54B30 arrived with 3.0 L and 306 hp in the BMW E90 335i, BMW E92 335i and BMW E82 135i.

Every N54 version explained
N54B30 (3.0 L, 306 hp)
The N54B30 is a 3.0 L inline-6 petrol engine, twin-turbo, rated at 306 hp and 400 Nm. BMW built it from 2006 to 2016. That is about 102 hp and 133 Nm per litre, a strong figure for a road engine of its era. It was fitted to the BMW E90 335i, BMW E92 335i, BMW E82 135i, BMW E60 535i and BMW E89 Z4 35i. See every N54B30 in stock.
Reading the code: N marks an N-series code, the generation of BMW engines introduced from 2001; 54 is the family number; B stands for petrol (from the German Benzin); 30 is the capacity in decilitres, so 3.0 litres.
We have 230 N54B30 units in stock, priced from 2.139,00 € to 5.855,00 €.

Will an N54 fit my BMW? Model-by-model answers
Short answers for every model that left the factory with an N54, with prices from our current stock.
Will the N54B30 fit my BMW E89 Z4 35i?
Yes, the BMW E89 Z4 35i left the factory with the N54B30, so an N54B30 from another car is the direct replacement. The second Z4 was built 2009–2016, and the N54B30 was produced 2006–2016, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.
How much is a replacement engine for a BMW E89 Z4 35i?
We have 4 N54B30 engines from E89 donor cars, priced from 2.382,00 € to 5.013,00 €. Delivery to your door is included, and the engine carries a 12-month warranty when fitted by a qualified workshop. Add fitting labour and the parts you replace at the same time — seals, cooling parts and mounts — to estimate the total.

Common N54 problems and what to check
No engine is perfect. These are the faults our workshop sees most often on the N54, what causes them and how to check a used unit before you buy.
High-pressure fuel pump
Early HPFPs failed, causing long starts and limp mode. Updated pumps fixed most issues.
How to check: Check the part number and for fuel pressure codes.
Wastegate rattle
Turbo wastegate arms wear and rattle; turbos can also leak oil.
How to check: Listen when lifting off throttle and check for oil smoke.
Piezo injectors
Injectors can leak; updated revisions are more reliable.
How to check: Check the injector index revisions.
Electric water pump
The pump fails around 100,000 km.
How to check: Ask when it was replaced.
Charge pipe and oil leaks
The plastic charge pipe cracks; oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets leak.
How to check: Look for oil and listen for boost leaks.
Carbon build-up
Intake valves carbon up and need walnut blasting.
How to check: Borescope inspection.

Diagnosing a failing N54: symptoms and causes
If your current engine is showing one of these symptoms, this table helps you judge whether it can be repaired or whether a replacement N54 is the better route.
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Knocking from the bottom of the engine | A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings. |
| Overheating or losing coolant | Coolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank. |
| White smoke that smells sweet | Coolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler. |
| Blue smoke | Oil burning in the cylinders. |
| Rough idle or misfire | Ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes. |
| Loss of power | Start with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes. |
| Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start | The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. |
| Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode | A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. |
| Poor low-down torque and uneven idle | VANOS seals or solenoids. |
| Long cranking before the engine starts | On direct-injection engines, a weak high-pressure fuel pump or leaking injector lets pressure drop when the engine is off. |
Knocking from the bottom of the engine. A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings. Stop driving: bearing failure ends with a broken connecting rod. A used engine is normally the most economical fix once the bottom end is damaged.
Overheating or losing coolant. Coolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank. Overheating should be fixed before it warps the head.
White smoke that smells sweet. Coolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler. Check the coolant level and look for oil in the coolant.
Blue smoke. Oil burning in the cylinders. A puff on start-up points to valve stem seals; constant smoke under load points to piston rings or, on turbo engines, turbo seals.
Rough idle or misfire. Ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes. A misfire on one cylinder that moves when you swap coils is a coil; one that stays is a plug, injector or compression problem.
Loss of power. Start with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes. A gradual loss with poor compression on a test points to internal wear.
Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.
Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode. A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. Check the pipes first, then the turbo shaft for play.
Poor low-down torque and uneven idle. VANOS seals or solenoids. The engine may run well at high revs but feel flat and lumpy at low speed.
Long cranking before the engine starts. On direct-injection engines, a weak high-pressure fuel pump or leaking injector lets pressure drop when the engine is off.
Repair or replace your N54?
As a rule, bolt-on faults are worth repairing and internal damage is not. Seals, sensors, coils, injectors, pumps and turbos can be replaced in the car. Once the bearings, crankshaft, bores or head of an N54 are damaged, a used engine is usually cheaper and quicker than a rebuild.
Ask your workshop for a written diagnosis before deciding. A compression test, an oil analysis and a borescope inspection take an hour or two and remove most of the guesswork.
N54 maintenance and running costs
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Engine oil | 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01, about 6.5 litres. |
| Timing drive | Timing chain at the front. |
| Service interval | Oil every 10,000 km; plugs every 40,000 km. |
Fit new plugs, check injectors and confirm the HPFP revision before installing.
The single best thing you can do for an N54 is to change the oil more often than the longest factory interval. Clean oil protects bearings, chains, VANOS units and turbochargers, and costs far less than any of them.
Let a turbocharged engine idle for thirty seconds after hard driving so the turbo can cool, and warm it up gently before using full boost.
Cooling parts are consumables on this engine. Plan to replace the water pump, thermostat and expansion tank every 100,000 km or so, before they fail.
Buying a used N54: the full checklist
Work through these points before you order a used N54, whoever you buy from.
- Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
- Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
- List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
- Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
- Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
- Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
- Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.
- Electric water pump. This engine uses an electric water pump. It fails without warning and needs a diagnostic bleeding routine when it is replaced or the system is refilled.

Fitting a replacement N54
These are the steps we recommend to every workshop fitting one of our N54 engines.
- Compare the engines side by side. Put the replacement next to the old engine and compare sensors, brackets, connectors, the sump, the starter and the flywheel or flexplate. Note anything that must be transferred.
- Transfer the parts that differ. Move the parts that are specific to your car, such as the engine harness on some models, the sump on xDrive cars or the air conditioning compressor bracket. Use new seals and gaskets for everything you move.
- Replace the rear main seal and drive parts. With the engine out, the rear crankshaft seal is easy to reach. Fit a new one, inspect the flywheel and clutch on manual cars or the converter seal on automatics.
- Renew the cooling system. Most engine failures start with cooling. Fit a new water pump, thermostat and hoses, check the radiator and fan, and use the correct coolant.
- Fit new engine mounts. Old mounts transfer vibration and can let the engine move enough to damage hoses. They are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out.
- Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
- Prepare the turbo. Fit new oil feed and return seals, clean the intercooler and pipes of any oil or debris from the old engine, and prime the turbo with oil before starting.
- Clean the intake. If the old engine failed internally, debris can be in the intake or intercooler. Clean them so nothing reaches the new engine.
- Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
- Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
- Reset VANOS adaptations. Clear the VANOS adaptations so the ECU learns the camshaft positions of the new engine.
- First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
- First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

Tuning and upgrades
The N54 responds strongly to remaps and bigger turbos. Well-built examples exceed 500 hp with upgraded fuelling.
Whatever you plan, start with a healthy engine: a compression test, fresh fluids and the known weak parts replaced. Power upgrades amplify any existing problem.
N54 compared with similar BMW engines
Buyers often compare the N54 with these engines. Here is how they line up.
| Engine | Power | Years | Median price in stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| N54 | 306–306 hp | 2006–2016 | 3.595,00 € |
| N55 | 306–326 hp | 2009–2017 | 4.025,00 € |
| B58 | 340–374 hp | 2015–2026 | 5.870,00 € |
| M30 | 150–218 hp | 1968–1994 | on request |
The N55 reaches higher outputs (up to 326 hp against 306 hp) and uses timing chain at the front. Its best-known faults are oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket. Read the N55 guide.
The B58 reaches higher outputs (up to 374 hp against 306 hp) and uses timing chain at the rear (gearbox end). Its best-known faults are coolant leaks and oil filter housing. Read the B58 guide.
The M30 is milder (up to 218 hp against 306 hp) and uses duplex timing chain at the front with a hydraulic tensioner; no service interval. Its best-known faults are head gasket and cracked heads and cooling system age. Read the M30 guide.

Which cars use the BMW N54B30 engine?
BMW fitted the N54B30 to the BMW E90 335i, BMW E92 335i, BMW E82 135i, BMW E60 535i, BMW E89 Z4 sDrive35i and BMW E71 X6 xDrive35i. These cars were built with this engine from about 2006 to 2010.
The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.
The N54B30 is the only N54 version we list, which makes it easy to pick, but the wiring and the engine computer still need to match your car.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much power and torque does the BMW N54B30 have?
From the factory the BMW N54B30 makes 225 kW (306 HP) and 400 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,979 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve petrol engine with twin turbochargers.
Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.
A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.
Every N54B30 on our site lists its year and mileage. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

How do I know a used N54B30 engine is in good shape?
The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.
When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.
On a petrol engine like the N54B30, a careful fitter will also look at the spark plugs, the coils and the timing side before the engine goes in.
If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

What comes with a used N54B30 engine?
Each N54B30 is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.
Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.
Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.
On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

Is the BMW N54B30 a diesel or petrol engine?
The N54B30 is a petrol engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,979 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with twin turbochargers, and it was built to the Euro 4 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.
See all N54 Engines · Search N54B30 in the shop
Are there other versions of the BMW N54B30?
In our yard the N54B30 is the only listed version of the N54 family. It makes 225 kW (306 HP) and 400 Nm, and was built from 2006 to 2010.
Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.
This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What should I replace when I fit a used N54B30 engine?
A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Clean the intercooler and the intake pipes, and fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil before the first start, so the turbo never runs dry. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.
Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.
Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.
The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Does a used N54B30 engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.
The warranty does not cover damage from wrong fitting, overheating, low oil, wrong fluids or fuel, engines that were opened or modified without our approval, or labour and towing costs.
To claim, send us your order number, a short description of the problem, photos or a video, and a mechanic's report if we ask for one. If the claim is approved, we repair, replace or refund the engine.
Keep the receipts for the fitting, the oil and the filters. They make any claim quick and simple.

Can you check if an N54B30 fits my car with my VIN?
Yes, and it is free. Send the 17-character VIN of your car and, if you have it, the gearbox code. We check the engine family, the build year window and the parts your car needs.
For the N54B30, we confirm that your car was built with this code or with a version that can take it. BMW used it in the BMW E90 335i, BMW E92 335i, BMW E82 135i, BMW E60 535i and BMW E89 Z4 sDrive35i and more.

What should I know about the BMW N54 engine?
BMW N54 3.0 twin-turbo petrol engines for 135i, 335i and 535i. We list one version: N54B30 (3.0 liter (2,979 cc), 225 kW (306 HP), 2006 to 2010).
Because there is only one version, the code is easy to match. You still need the engine computer and wiring that suit your car.
The N54 family was used in chassis E90, E92, E82, E60, E89 and E71. Each engine in the yard is inspected in Hamburg. The code is matched to the listing, the parts on the engine are recorded, the openings are sealed and the real unit is photographed.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
What should I check on a used BMW N54 engine?
Start with the basics: the engine code on the block, the recorded mileage and the photos. Make sure the code matches your car and the parts you need are on the unit.
On an N54 petrol engine, a fitter usually checks the spark plugs, the coils, the timing side and the oil seals. These parts are easy to check before fitting and easy to change if needed.
If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay. An inspection certificate can travel with the order on request.
Once fitted, change the oil and filter early and drive gently at first. Report any problem right away so the warranty stays valid.

They went into chassis E90, E92, E82, E60, E89 and E71. The exact year of a car matters, because BMW sometimes changed the engine version or its parts in the middle of a model's life.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.
France is in the EU customs area for this shipment, so there is no import duty and no customs paperwork.
The carrier delivers to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready, and check the wrapping before you sign.

Glossary
- VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
- Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
- Piezo injector — A fast-acting injector that uses a piezoelectric crystal. It allows precise fuel delivery but is sensitive to fuel quality.
- Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
- Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
- Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
- Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
- Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
- LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
- xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
- DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
- CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
- Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
- Electric water pump — A water pump driven by an electric motor. It needs a diagnostic bleeding routine when the system is refilled.
- TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.
Our verdict
Bought with care, the N54 is a sound choice. Check the code against your VIN, ask for compression figures and photographs, replace the known weak parts while the engine is out, and fit it with fresh fluids and filters. Do that and a used N54 will give years of service.
