BMW timing chain problems, engine by engine

Which BMW engines have timing chain problems, how to spot chain stretch and guide failure, and what a fix costs, from the M10 to the B58.

Timing chain failures are the most feared BMW engine fault. A stretched chain or broken guide can destroy an engine in seconds, and on several modern BMWs the chain sits at the gearbox end, so fixing it means taking the engine out.

This guide lists every BMW engine family, explains how its camshafts are driven, and shows which ones have known chain or guide problems. It also explains how to recognise the warning signs and how to protect a used engine before it goes in.

Chains, belts and guides

BMW has used both rubber timing belts and metal chains. The M20, M21 and M40 used belts that must be changed on time; nearly every other BMW engine uses a chain designed to last the life of the engine.

Chains do not usually snap on their own. Problems come from the parts around them: plastic guide rails that crack, hydraulic tensioners that lose pressure, and chains that stretch when oil changes are stretched. Modern BMW long-life oil intervals of 30,000 km or more have been blamed for many failures.

Warning signs

A rattle on a cold start that fades after a few seconds is the classic sign of a weak tensioner or stretched chain. On engines with the chain at the rear, such as the N47, N57, N20, B47 and B57, the noise comes from the gearbox end.

Other signs are camshaft timing fault codes, a rough idle, a whine that rises with engine speed and, on some engines, metal particles in the oil. Any of these should be checked before the engine is driven further.

Front or rear chain

On older BMW engines the chain is at the front, behind the timing cover, and can be reached with the engine in the car. On the N47, N57, N20, N26, B37, B38, B47, B48, B57 and B58 the chain is at the rear, against the gearbox. Replacing it normally means taking the engine out.

That is why buying a used engine is often the right time to change the chain: the engine is already out, and the job takes hours rather than days.

Every BMW engine family and its timing drive

M10 (1962–1988)

The M10 is the engine that saved BMW. Launched in 1962 in the Neue Klasse saloon, this cast-iron four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft went on to power the 02 Series, the first 3 and 5 Series, and — in turbocharged form — the Formula One engine that won the 1983 world title.

Timing drive: Single-row or duplex timing chain on the front of the engine; no scheduled change, inspect guides when the head is off.

Timing chain guides and tensioner: The duplex chain lasts well, but the plastic guide and the spring tensioner age. A rattle on a cold start that fades as oil pressure builds is the usual sign. Listen at the front cover during the first seconds after a cold start.

M20 (1977–1993)

The M20 is BMW's small straight-six, built from 1977 to 1993 for the E21, E30, E12, E28 and E34. It is the engine behind the E30 325i and the economical 'eta' 2.7, and it is why so many people still describe a BMW six as smooth.

Timing drive: Rubber timing belt with tensioner, changed with the water pump every 60,000 km or four years.

Timing belt failure: The M20 is an interference engine. If the belt or tensioner fails, pistons hit valves and the head is scrap. Belts should be changed every 60,000 km or four years, whichever comes first. Ask for the date of the last belt and tensioner change. If there is no record, treat it as due.

M30 (1968–1994)

The M30 is the 'Big Six', the straight-six that powered BMW's large cars for more than a quarter of a century. It went into the E3, E9, E12, E23, E24, E28, E32 and E34, and its 3.5 litre version drove the M535i and 635CSi.

Timing drive: Duplex timing chain at the front with a hydraulic tensioner; no service interval.

Timing chain tensioner: The duplex chain lasts, but the tensioner piston and guide rails wear on high-mileage units. Listen for a cold-start rattle at the front of the engine.

M40 (1987–1994)

The M40 is the belt-driven four-cylinder that replaced the M10 in the E30 316i and 318i from 1987, then went on into the early E36 and the E34 518i. It is a quiet, economical engine that kept BMW's entry-level cars on the road through the early 1990s.

Timing drive: Rubber timing belt with tensioner, changed on time.

Timing belt: The M40 belt has a short life compared with later engines. If it breaks, valves meet pistons. Change it with the tensioner every 40,000 to 60,000 km. Look for a dated belt sticker or invoice.

M42 and M44 (1989–2000)

The M42 was BMW's first sixteen-valve four-cylinder for road cars, and it gave the E30 318is its free-revving character. The M44, its 1.9 litre successor, carried the same spirit into the E36 318is, 318ti and Z3 1.9.

Timing drive: Timing chain at the front with guides and a hydraulic tensioner.

Timing chain guides and tensioner: Guide rails and the tensioner wear, leading to chain noise on start-up. Listen at the front of the engine on a cold start.

M43 (1993–2002)

The M43 is the economical eight-valve four-cylinder that powered the E36 316i and 318i, the E46 316i and 318i, the Z3 1.8 and the E34 518i. It replaced the belt-driven M40 with a chain-driven design.

Timing drive: Single-row timing chain with a plastic guide rail and hydraulic tensioner.

Timing chain guide rail: The M43's plastic guide rail can crack and break, which lets the chain slap and in the worst case jump. It is the single most important check on this engine. Remove the valve cover and inspect the top of the guide; replace it when fitting any used M43.

Protecting a used engine's timing chain

  1. Compare the engines side by side. Put the replacement next to the old engine and compare sensors, brackets, connectors, the sump, the starter and the flywheel or flexplate. Note anything that must be transferred.
  2. Transfer the parts that differ. Move the parts that are specific to your car, such as the engine harness on some models, the sump on xDrive cars or the air conditioning compressor bracket. Use new seals and gaskets for everything you move.
  3. Replace the rear main seal and drive parts. With the engine out, the rear crankshaft seal is easy to reach. Fit a new one, inspect the flywheel and clutch on manual cars or the converter seal on automatics.
  4. Renew the cooling system. Most engine failures start with cooling. Fit a new water pump, thermostat and hoses, check the radiator and fan, and use the correct coolant.
  5. Fit new engine mounts. Old mounts transfer vibration and can let the engine move enough to damage hoses. They are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out.
  6. Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
  7. Replace the rear timing chain if in doubt. On engines with the chain at the gearbox end, chain work needs the engine out. If the history is unknown, replace the chain, guides and tensioner before fitting.
  8. Fit a new timing belt kit. Fit a new belt, tensioner and water pump and set the timing with the correct tools before the first start.
  9. Clean the intake. If the old engine failed internally, debris can be in the intake or intercooler. Clean them so nothing reaches the new engine.
  10. Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
  11. Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
  12. First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
  13. First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

Delivery, warranty and payment

Before an engine leaves our Hamburg yard it is drained of oil and coolant, every opening is sealed, and it is strapped to a pallet and wrapped. We send photographs of the packed unit and the tracking details.

Delivery is door to door and included in the price. Most European addresses receive the engine within five to ten working days; Germany and its neighbours are usually faster.

Every engine carries a 12-month warranty on eligible internal failure when a qualified workshop fits it with new fluids and filters. Payment is by card, bank transfer or crypto; your invoice is emailed as soon as you order.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
  • ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.
