BMW F20 116i N13B16A Engine 2012

The N13 is a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder developed with PSA and used by BMW from 2011 to 2016. It powered the F20 114i, 116i and 118i and the F30 316i.

It is closely related to the MINI Prince engines, and it shares their known weak points: timing chain wear and carbon build-up. A used N13 with good history is a cost-effective replacement.

History of the N13

BMW adapted the Prince engine for longitudinal mounting in rear-drive cars. It used direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and double VANOS. It was replaced by the B38 three-cylinder from 2015.

2011: the N13B16 arrived with 1.6 L and 136 hp in the BMW F20 116i, BMW F20 118i and BMW F30 316i.

Every N13 version explained

N13B16 (1.6 L, 136 hp)

N13B16: 1.6 L, inline-4, petrol, turbocharged. Output is 136 hp with 220 Nm of torque, and production ran from 2011 to 2016. That is about 85 hp and 138 Nm per litre, a strong figure for a road engine of its era. It was fitted to the BMW F20 116i, BMW F20 118i and BMW F30 316i.

Reading the code: N marks an N-series code, the generation of BMW engines introduced from 2001; 13 is the family number; B stands for petrol (from the German Benzin); 16 is the capacity in decilitres, so 1.6 litres.

We have 5 N13B16 units in stock, priced from 1.213,00 € to 3.149,00 €.

Which cars use the N13

The N13 was fitted to 3 models. The list below is grouped by chassis generation so you can find your car quickly. Always confirm the exact code with your VIN, because BMW often used more than one engine in the same model.

BMW F20 second 1 Series five-door (2011–2019)

In the second 1 Series five-door, built 2011–2019 as a hatchback, the N13 powered the 116i (N13B16, 136 hp) and 118i (N13B16, 136 hp).

When ordering for an F20, check whether the car is rear-drive or xDrive and whether it has a manual or automatic gearbox, because the sump and flywheel can differ. We currently have 3 N13 units from F20 donor cars. All F20 engines in stock.

The 116i uses the N13B16. BMW 116i engines for sale.

Common N13 problems and what to check

No engine is perfect. These are the faults our workshop sees most often on the N13, what causes them and how to check a used unit before you buy.

Timing chain stretch

The chain and tensioner wear, causing rattle and timing faults.

How to check: Listen on a cold start and check timing values.

Carbon build-up

Direct injection lets carbon build on intake valves, causing rough running.

How to check: Inspect the intake valves with a borescope.

High-pressure fuel pump

The pump can fail, causing long starts and loss of power.

How to check: Check fuel pressure fault codes.

Turbo wastegate

Wastegate rattle develops at higher mileage.

How to check: Listen for a rattle when lifting off.

Diagnosing a failing N13: symptoms and causes

If your current engine is showing one of these symptoms, this table helps you judge whether it can be repaired or whether a replacement N13 is the better route.

SymptomLikely cause
Knocking from the bottom of the engineA deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings.
Overheating or losing coolantCoolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank.
White smoke that smells sweetCoolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler.
Blue smokeOil burning in the cylinders.
Rough idle or misfireIgnition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes.
Loss of powerStart with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes.
Rattle for a few seconds after a cold startThe classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain.
Whistle, loss of boost or limp modeA split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings.
Poor low-down torque and uneven idleVANOS seals or solenoids.
Limp mode with a Valvetronic faultThe Valvetronic motor, its eccentric shaft sensor or the wiring.
Long cranking before the engine startsOn direct-injection engines, a weak high-pressure fuel pump or leaking injector lets pressure drop when the engine is off.

Knocking from the bottom of the engine. A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings. Stop driving: bearing failure ends with a broken connecting rod. A used engine is normally the most economical fix once the bottom end is damaged.

Overheating or losing coolant. Coolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank. Overheating should be fixed before it warps the head.

White smoke that smells sweet. Coolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler. Check the coolant level and look for oil in the coolant.

Blue smoke. Oil burning in the cylinders. A puff on start-up points to valve stem seals; constant smoke under load points to piston rings or, on turbo engines, turbo seals.

Rough idle or misfire. Ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes. A misfire on one cylinder that moves when you swap coils is a coil; one that stays is a plug, injector or compression problem.

Loss of power. Start with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes. A gradual loss with poor compression on a test points to internal wear.

Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.

Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode. A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. Check the pipes first, then the turbo shaft for play.

Poor low-down torque and uneven idle. VANOS seals or solenoids. The engine may run well at high revs but feel flat and lumpy at low speed.

Limp mode with a Valvetronic fault. The Valvetronic motor, its eccentric shaft sensor or the wiring. The engine runs on a reduced throttle until it is repaired.

Long cranking before the engine starts. On direct-injection engines, a weak high-pressure fuel pump or leaking injector lets pressure drop when the engine is off.

Repair or replace your N13?

Repair makes sense when the fault is outside the engine or in a part that can be replaced without opening it: sensors, coils, injectors, gaskets, the water pump or a turbo. Replacement makes sense when the bottom end, the crankshaft, the bores or the head are damaged, because rebuilding an N13 properly costs more than a good used unit.

Ask your workshop for a written diagnosis before deciding. A compression test, an oil analysis and a borescope inspection take an hour or two and remove most of the guesswork.

N13 maintenance and running costs

ItemRecommendation
Engine oil5W-30 BMW Longlife-01, about 4.25 litres.
Timing driveTiming chain at the front.
Service intervalOil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.

Change the chain and tensioner when buying a high-mileage unit.

The single best thing you can do for an N13 is to change the oil more often than the longest factory interval. Clean oil protects bearings, chains, VANOS units and turbochargers, and costs far less than any of them.

Let a turbocharged engine idle for thirty seconds after hard driving so the turbo can cool, and warm it up gently before using full boost.

Buying a used N13: the full checklist

Work through these points before you order a used N13, whoever you buy from.

  1. Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
  2. Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
  3. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  4. Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
  5. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  6. List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
  7. Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
  8. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  9. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  10. Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
  11. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  12. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  13. VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
  14. Valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft sensor. The Valvetronic motor and its sensor cause limp-mode faults when they fail. Inspect the connector and the seal around the motor for oil.
  15. Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.

Fitting a replacement N13

These are the steps we recommend to every workshop fitting one of our N13 engines.

  1. Compare the engines side by side. Put the replacement next to the old engine and compare sensors, brackets, connectors, the sump, the starter and the flywheel or flexplate. Note anything that must be transferred.
  2. Transfer the parts that differ. Move the parts that are specific to your car, such as the engine harness on some models, the sump on xDrive cars or the air conditioning compressor bracket. Use new seals and gaskets for everything you move.
  3. Replace the rear main seal and drive parts. With the engine out, the rear crankshaft seal is easy to reach. Fit a new one, inspect the flywheel and clutch on manual cars or the converter seal on automatics.
  4. Renew the cooling system. Most engine failures start with cooling. Fit a new water pump, thermostat and hoses, check the radiator and fan, and use the correct coolant.
  5. Fit new engine mounts. Old mounts transfer vibration and can let the engine move enough to damage hoses. They are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out.
  6. Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
  7. Prepare the turbo. Fit new oil feed and return seals, clean the intercooler and pipes of any oil or debris from the old engine, and prime the turbo with oil before starting.
  8. Clean the intake. If the old engine failed internally, debris can be in the intake or intercooler. Clean them so nothing reaches the new engine.
  9. Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
  10. Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
  11. Reset VANOS adaptations. Clear the VANOS adaptations so the ECU learns the camshaft positions of the new engine.
  12. Teach the Valvetronic limit stops. Run the Valvetronic learning routine so the ECU knows the eccentric shaft limits.
  13. First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
  14. First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

Tuning and upgrades

Remaps raise output modestly. The engine is mainly bought as a direct replacement.

Whatever you plan, start with a healthy engine: a compression test, fresh fluids and the known weak parts replaced. Power upgrades amplify any existing problem.

The carrier delivers to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready, and check the wrapping before you sign.

How should I drive in the first 1,000 km?

Drive gently and vary the speed. Avoid full throttle and very high revs for the first few hundred kilometres.

Watch the temperature and the oil pressure, and check the oil and coolant level often.

Many fitters change the oil and the filter again after the first 1,000 km. It is cheap and removes any dirt from the fitting.

Report any warning light or strange noise to us right away.

How do I find the engine code of my car?

The engine code is stamped on the engine block. On most BMW engines it sits on the side of the block, near the base of the cylinder head or by the oil filter housing.

It is also on many registration papers, and a dealer or a parts shop can read it from your VIN.

The easiest way is to send us your VIN. We read the engine code for you and tell you which engine fits.

Never order by the badge on the boot alone. The same model name can hide two different engines.

What does the free VIN check do?

The VIN check on our site reads the year, the make, the model and the engine from the public vehicle register.

After that, our desk confirms the gearbox and the parts your car needs, so the engine you reserve is the right one.

The check is free and there is no obligation to buy.

Your VIN is 17 characters long. You find it on the registration papers, at the bottom of the windscreen or on the door pillar.

BMW F30 328i N20B20 Engine 2015, 90,300 km — 2.517,00 €

What is the inspection certificate?

The inspection certificate is a sheet that records the unit that leaves our yard.

It notes that the engine or gearbox code was checked against the listing, that the parts were recorded as fitted, that the openings were sealed, and that the unit was photographed and packed with a tracking number.

You can ask for the certificate on any unit in the yard. It is sent with the order confirmation.

Many buyers keep it with the car's service papers.

What should I do before the first start?

Fit a new oil filter, fill with the correct oil and refill the coolant. On turbo engines, fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil.

Turn the engine over without fuel or ignition until the oil pressure light goes out. This brings oil to every bearing before the engine runs.

Check all hoses, clips and electrical plugs, then start the engine and let it idle while you look for leaks.

Bleed the cooling system and top up as the air comes out.

Is it safe to pay by card?

Yes. Card payments are handled by trusted payment providers with industry-standard encryption.

You never type your card number on our site. We email you a secure payment link after you place the order, and 3-D Secure applies.

Payment is taken when the order is confirmed.

We do not store any card details.

How long does engine delivery to Denmark take?

Delivery from our Hamburg yard to Denmark takes 1 to 3 working days after dispatch. Orders confirmed before 14:00 CET on a working day leave Hamburg the same day. Later and weekend orders leave the next working day.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

Can I reuse parts from my old engine?

Often yes. Turbos, injectors, the alternator and other ancillaries can move over if they are in good condition.

Parts that failed with the old engine, or that look worn, should be replaced. A worn turbo can damage a good engine.

Before an engine is listed we check the code, write down the parts on it and seal the openings. The photos are taken at the same time.

If you want to see more, ask the desk for extra photos or a short video. We send them before you pay.

Do I need to code the engine computer after a swap?

If you reuse the engine computer from your car, and the new engine has the same code, little or no coding is usually needed.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.

Our verdict

The N13 rewards owners who understand it. Check the code against your VIN, ask for compression figures and photographs, replace the known weak parts while the engine is out, and fit it with fresh fluids and filters. Do that and a used N13 will give years of service.
