How to find your BMW engine code

Find the exact BMW engine code for your car from the VIN, the block stamp or the registration papers, with a model-by-model table of every engine code.

Ordering the wrong engine is the most expensive mistake a BMW owner can make. Two cars with the same badge can carry different engines depending on the build year, the market and the gearbox, and the code on the boot lid tells you very little.

This guide shows the three reliable ways to find your engine code — the VIN, the stamp on the block and the documents — explains how BMW's engine codes are built, and lists every engine code for every BMW model we supply.

Why the badge is not enough

BMW model names describe a level of performance, not an engine. A 320i built in 1999 has an M52, one built in 2002 an N42 or M54 depending on the market, and one built in 2016 a B48. A 330i from 2019 also uses a B48. A 535i can carry an N54 or an N55, and an X5 xDrive50i an N63, an N63TU or an N63TU2.

The safe approach is to treat the model name as a starting point and confirm the code before ordering. A ten-minute check prevents weeks of wrong parts, wiring and coding problems.

Method one: the VIN

Every BMW built since 1981 has a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. It is printed on the registration document, on a plate in the engine bay, at the bottom of the windscreen on the passenger side and, on most cars, on the driver's door pillar.

The last seven characters are the serial number BMW uses in its own parts systems. Send them to our desk and we will return the exact engine code, the production date, the gearbox and any options that change the engine, such as xDrive or a different sump.

The VIN also shows the build date, which matters because BMW often changed engines in the middle of a model's life (the 'LCI', or Life Cycle Impulse).

Method two: the engine stamp

BMW stamps the engine code and serial number on the block. On most four- and six-cylinder engines the stamp is on a machined pad on the left-hand side of the block, below the intake or behind the oil filter housing. On V8 and V12 engines it is usually at the back of the block near the gearbox flange.

The stamp shows the engine code (for example N47D20C or N55B30A) followed by an eight-digit serial number. If the stamp is hard to read, clean it with brake cleaner and photograph it with a torch held at an angle.

Method three: the documents

The registration certificate lists the engine capacity and power output but not normally the code. Service books sometimes carry a sticker with the engine code. A BMW dealer can print a vehicle data sheet from the VIN.

If you have a previous invoice for engine work, the parts numbers on it often identify the engine version.

How BMW engine codes work

Modern BMW engine codes follow a pattern. The first letter shows the family: M for older BMW engines, N for the 2000s generation, B for the modular engines from 2013, S for BMW M engines and P for racing engines. The two digits after the letter are the family number.

The next letter shows the fuel: B for petrol (Benzin) and D for diesel. The two digits after it show the capacity in decilitres, so B30 means a 3.0 litre petrol. Newer codes add a letter for the version (A, B, C, U, O, T) and older ones use TU for a technical update.

For example, N57D30B is the third major version of the N57 3.0 litre diesel, often with higher output. B48A20 is the front-drive version of the 2.0 litre B48, while B48B20 is the rear-drive version.

BMW engine codes by model

Find your chassis below. Each table lists the models we supply engines for, with the engine code BMW fitted and the production years. If two codes are listed for one model, the build date or market decides which one your car has.

Engine families and where the code is stamped

M10 (1962–1988)

The M10 is the engine that saved BMW. Launched in 1962 in the Neue Klasse saloon, this cast-iron four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft went on to power the 02 Series, the first 3 and 5 Series, and — in turbocharged form — the Formula One engine that won the 1983 world title.

Versions: M10B16, M10B18, M10B20 and M10B15, from 80 to 125 hp. BMW designed the M10 under Alex von Falkenhausen with a canted block, a chain-driven camshaft and a crossflow aluminium head.

Known faults: camshaft and rocker wear, timing chain guides and tensioner, warped head after overheating, valve stem seals and oil leaks from age. Care: Valve clearance is adjusted cold with eccentric adjusters on the rocker arms. Fit a new spray bar if the old one is blocked or loose.

M20 (1977–1993)

The M20 is BMW's small straight-six, built from 1977 to 1993 for the E21, E30, E12, E28 and E34. It is the engine behind the E30 325i and the economical 'eta' 2.7, and it is why so many people still describe a BMW six as smooth.

Versions: M20B20, M20B23, M20B25 and M20B27, from 125 to 170 hp. The M20 arrived in the E12 520/6 and E21 320/6 as a 2.0 litre with a single belt-driven camshaft.

Known faults: timing belt failure, cylinder head cracks, rocker arm and shaft wear, oil spray bar and cam wear and water pump and thermostat. Care: Valve clearance is set cold at about 0.25 mm with eccentric adjusters. Use a new head bolt set whenever the head comes off.

M30 (1968–1994)

The M30 is the 'Big Six', the straight-six that powered BMW's large cars for more than a quarter of a century. It went into the E3, E9, E12, E23, E24, E28, E32 and E34, and its 3.5 litre version drove the M535i and 635CSi.

Versions: M30B25, M30B28, M30B30, M30B34, M30B35, M30B32 and M90, from 150 to 218 hp. Introduced in 1968 at 2.5 and 2.8 litres, the M30 kept its iron block and single chain-driven camshaft throughout.

Known faults: head gasket and cracked heads, cooling system age, rocker arm wear, timing chain tensioner and oil pressure sender and leaks. Care: Valve clearances are set with eccentric adjusters at about 0.30 mm cold. Keep the cooling system fresh and the fan clutch healthy.

Full M30 guide · M30 engines for sale

M40 (1987–1994)

The M40 is the belt-driven four-cylinder that replaced the M10 in the E30 316i and 318i from 1987, then went on into the early E36 and the E34 518i. It is a quiet, economical engine that kept BMW's entry-level cars on the road through the early 1990s.

Versions: M40B16 and M40B18, from 102 to 113 hp. BMW built the M40 from 1987 to 1994 in 1.6 and 1.8 litre form with a single belt-driven camshaft and eight valves.

Known faults: timing belt, camshaft lobe wear, rocker arms and cooling and thermostat. Care: Because cam wear is common, a new camshaft and rockers are a sensible addition when a used M40 is fitted.

Full M40 guide · M40 engines for sale

M42 and M44 (1989–2000)

The M42 was BMW's first sixteen-valve four-cylinder for road cars, and it gave the E30 318is its free-revving character. The M44, its 1.9 litre successor, carried the same spirit into the E36 318is, 318ti and Z3 1.9.

Versions: M42B18 and M44B19, from 140 to 140 hp. The M42 arrived in 1989 at 1.8 litres with two chain-driven camshafts, four valves per cylinder and hydraulic lifters.

Known faults: head gasket, timing chain guides and tensioner, valve cover and oil leaks and plastic cooling parts. Care: Hydraulic lifters mean no valve adjustment, but they need clean oil of the right viscosity to stay quiet.

In stock: 51 units from 1.107,00 €.

M43 (1993–2002)

The M43 is the economical eight-valve four-cylinder that powered the E36 316i and 318i, the E46 316i and 318i, the Z3 1.8 and the E34 518i. It replaced the belt-driven M40 with a chain-driven design.

Versions: M43B16, M43B18 and M43B19, from 102 to 118 hp. Introduced in 1993 at 1.6 and 1.8 litres, the M43 used a single camshaft driven by a chain and hydraulic lifters.

Known faults: timing chain guide rail, valve cover gasket leaks, ticking hydraulic lifters and engine mounts and vibration. Care: Replace the guide rail, tensioner and valve cover gasket before fitting a used M43. It is a small job with the engine out.

Full M43 guide · M43 engines for sale

M50 (1954–1996)

The M50 was BMW's first twin-cam, twenty-four-valve straight-six for the mass market. It powered the E34 520i and 525i and the E36 320i and 325i, and it is the foundation for many E30 six-cylinder swaps.

Versions: M50B20, M50B25, M502, M503, M507, M50TUB20 and M50TUB25, from 100 to 192 hp. BMW introduced the M50 in 1990 at 2.0 and 2.5 litres with an iron block, aluminium head, chain-driven camshafts and coil-on-plug ignition.

Known faults: cooling system, vanos seals (m50tu), crankcase ventilation valve, oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket. Care: Hydraulic lifters, no valve adjustment. Refresh VANOS seals when fitting a used M50TU.

In stock: 23 units from 907,00 €.

M52 (1994–2000)

The M52 is the aluminium-block successor to the M50, built from 1994 to 2000 for the E36, E39, E46 and Z3. Its 2.8 litre version in the 328i and 528i is still one of the best-balanced BMW sixes ever made.

Versions: M52B20, M52B25, M52B28 and M52TUB28, from 150 to 193 hp. The M52 arrived in 1994 with an aluminium block, Nikasil cylinder coating in most markets and single VANOS.

Known faults: nikasil bore wear, cooling system, vanos seals and solenoids, disa valve (m52tu) and crankcase ventilation. Care: Ask whether the block is Nikasil or Alusil. Engines built from late 1998 use Alusil.

In stock: 22 units from 1.301,00 €.

M54 (2000–2006)

The M54 is the last of BMW's port-injected straight-sixes before Valvetronic, and one of the most common used engines in Europe. It powered the E46 320i, 325i and 330i, the E39 520i to 530i, the E60, E83 X3, E53 X5 3.0i, E85 Z4 and the E65 730i.

Versions: M54B22, M54B25 and M54B30, from 170 to 231 hp. BMW introduced the M54 in 2000 at 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 litres, with double VANOS, an electronic throttle and the DISA variable intake.

Known faults: crankcase ventilation (ccv), disa valve flap, cooling system, oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets and oil consumption from piston rings. Care: Change the CCV system and DISA valve before fitting a used M54. Both are cheap compared with an engine.

In stock: 202 units from 887,00 €.

S14 (1986–1991)

The S14 is the four-cylinder racing engine that made the E30 M3 a touring-car legend. With individual throttle bodies and a red line near 7,000 rpm, it has a character no later four-cylinder BMW has matched.

Versions: S14B23 and S14B20, from 192 to 200 hp. BMW Motorsport built the S14 from 1986 to 1991, combining an M10-derived block with a four-valve head derived from the M88.

Known faults: valve clearances, timing chain and guides, throttle body linkage and bearing wear on track engines. Care: Keep the engine number and documentation together; matching numbers add value on an E30 M3.

M88 and S38 (1978–1996)

The M88 and S38 are the twenty-four-valve straight-sixes from BMW Motorsport that powered the M1, the M635CSi and the E28 and E34 M5. They are hand-assembled engines with individual throttle bodies and a deep, mechanical howl.

Versions: M88, S38B35, S38B36 and S38B38, from 260 to 340 hp. The M88 began in the M1 in 1978 and moved into the M635CSi and E28 M5 as the M88/3.

Known faults: valve clearances, timing chain guides, oil pump drive nut and throttle bodies and sensors. Care: The 3.8 litre S38B38 uses a dual-mass flywheel; check its condition when buying a complete unit.

In stock: 60 units from 2.837,00 €.

Yes, if your BMW E60 525d was built with the M57D25TU. BMW used this 2.5 liter (2,497 cc) diesel engine with 130 kW (177 HP) in the E60 525d from about 2000 to 2007.

In our records the M57D25TU is the engine for the E60 525d, which makes the match simple. Still, check the code on your old engine or send us your VIN.

Also tell us if your E60 has a manual or an automatic gearbox. The flywheel or the flex plate and some sensors depend on it.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

Delivery, warranty and payment

Before an engine leaves our Hamburg yard it is drained of oil and coolant, every opening is sealed, and it is strapped to a pallet and wrapped. We send photographs of the packed unit and the tracking details.

Door-to-door delivery is included to the address you give at checkout. Typical delivery takes three to five working days within Germany and neighbouring countries and five to ten working days to the rest of Europe and the UK.

A 12-month warranty covers eligible internal failure when the engine is fitted by a qualified workshop with new fluids and filters. You can pay by card, bank transfer or crypto and receive the invoice by email straight away.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
  • ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.

Browse every engine in stock or ask the Hamburg desk — send your VIN and we will confirm the right engine the same day.
