Common N57 problems and what to check

No engine is perfect. These are the faults our workshop sees most often on the N57, what causes them and how to check a used unit before you buy.

Swirl flaps

Swirl flaps can stick or break.

How to check: Check the intake.

EGR cooler

The EGR cooler can leak; BMW issued a recall for some cars.

How to check: Check the recall status.

Diesel particulate filter

The DPF clogs on short-trip cars.

How to check: Read the soot load.

Timing chain

Chains stretch on some high-mileage engines, but far less often than on the N47.

How to check: Listen for a rattle on a cold start.

Injectors

Injectors leak or fail.

How to check: Read injector correction values.

Diagnosing a failing N57: symptoms and causes

If your current engine is showing one of these symptoms, this table helps you judge whether it can be repaired or whether a replacement N57 is the better route.

SymptomLikely cause
Knocking from the bottom of the engineA deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings.
Overheating or losing coolantCoolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank.
White smoke that smells sweetCoolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler.
Blue smokeOil burning in the cylinders.
Rough idle or misfireIgnition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes.
Loss of powerStart with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes.
Rattle for a few seconds after a cold startThe classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain.
Rattle or whine from the gearbox endOn engines with the timing chain at the rear, a rattle or whine from the back of the engine is the warning sign of chain stretch or guide wear.
Whistle, loss of boost or limp modeA split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings.
Black smoke under accelerationToo much fuel for the air available: boost leaks, a sticking EGR valve, a dirty air mass meter or a leaking injector.
Hard starting when coldGlow plugs or the glow plug control unit.
Particulate filter warningShort trips stop the DPF from regenerating.
Sudden metallic noise followed by misfireOn diesels with swirl flaps, a broken flap or screw can enter a cylinder.

Knocking from the bottom of the engine. A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings. Stop driving: bearing failure ends with a broken connecting rod. A used engine is normally the most economical fix once the bottom end is damaged.

Overheating or losing coolant. Coolant loss without visible leaks points to a head gasket or a cracked head; visible leaks point to the water pump, hoses, thermostat housing or expansion tank. Overheating should be fixed before it warps the head.

White smoke that smells sweet. Coolant burning in the cylinders, from a head gasket, a cracked head or, on diesels, a leaking EGR cooler. Check the coolant level and look for oil in the coolant.

Blue smoke. Oil burning in the cylinders. A puff on start-up points to valve stem seals; constant smoke under load points to piston rings or, on turbo engines, turbo seals.

Rough idle or misfire. Ignition coils, spark plugs, injectors and vacuum leaks are the usual causes. A misfire on one cylinder that moves when you swap coils is a coil; one that stays is a plug, injector or compression problem.

Loss of power. Start with the simple things: air filter, boost leaks on turbo engines, fuel pressure and fault codes. A gradual loss with poor compression on a test points to internal wear.

Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.

Rattle or whine from the gearbox end. On engines with the timing chain at the rear, a rattle or whine from the back of the engine is the warning sign of chain stretch or guide wear.

Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode. A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. Check the pipes first, then the turbo shaft for play.

Black smoke under acceleration. Too much fuel for the air available: boost leaks, a sticking EGR valve, a dirty air mass meter or a leaking injector.

Hard starting when cold. Glow plugs or the glow plug control unit. On older diesels, also check the injection pump and fuel lines for air leaks.

Particulate filter warning. Short trips stop the DPF from regenerating. A long motorway run often clears it; a filter that keeps blocking may be covering an injector, EGR or turbo problem.

Sudden metallic noise followed by misfire. On diesels with swirl flaps, a broken flap or screw can enter a cylinder. Stop the engine immediately; continued running usually destroys the piston and head.

Repair or replace your N57?

As a rule, bolt-on faults are worth repairing and internal damage is not. Seals, sensors, coils, injectors, pumps and turbos can be replaced in the car. Once the bearings, crankshaft, bores or head of an N57 are damaged, a used engine is usually cheaper and quicker than a rebuild.

Timing chain work on the N57 needs the engine removed. When the chain has failed and damaged valves or pistons, a replacement engine with a sound chain is often the same price as the repair.

Ask your workshop for a written diagnosis before deciding. A compression test, an oil analysis and a borescope inspection take an hour or two and remove most of the guesswork.

N57 maintenance and running costs

ItemRecommendation
Engine oil5W-30 BMW Longlife-04, about 6.5 litres.
Timing driveTiming chain at the rear (gearbox end).
Service intervalOil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.

Check the EGR recall and the swirl flaps when buying.

The single best thing you can do for an N57 is to change the oil more often than the longest factory interval. Clean oil protects bearings, chains, VANOS units and turbochargers, and costs far less than any of them.

Let a turbocharged engine idle for thirty seconds after hard driving so the turbo can cool, and warm it up gently before using full boost.

Diesels need regular longer runs to regenerate their particulate filter. If the car mostly does short trips, plan a motorway drive every few weeks.

Buying a used N57: the full checklist

Work through these points before you order a used N57, whoever you buy from.

  1. Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
  2. Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
  3. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  4. Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
  5. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  6. List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
  7. Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
  8. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  9. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  10. Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
  11. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  12. Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
  13. Particulate filter and EGR history. Short-trip diesels clog their DPF and EGR systems. The engine may be fine, but ask whether the donor car had DPF warnings, and plan to clean or check your own filter before fitting.
  14. Swirl flaps. Check whether the swirl flaps are in place, blanked or removed. Broken swirl flaps are a known cause of engine failure on several BMW diesels, so many owners fit blanking plates when the intake is off.
  15. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  16. Gearbox-end timing chain. On this engine the timing chain sits at the gearbox end, so replacing it normally means removing the engine. If the chain has not been replaced, the time to do it is before the engine goes into your car.

Fitting a replacement N57

These are the steps we recommend to every workshop fitting one of our N57 engines.

  1. Compare the engines side by side. Put the replacement next to the old engine and compare sensors, brackets, connectors, the sump, the starter and the flywheel or flexplate. Note anything that must be transferred.
  2. Transfer the parts that differ. Move the parts that are specific to your car, such as the engine harness on some models, the sump on xDrive cars or the air conditioning compressor bracket. Use new seals and gaskets for everything you move.
  3. Replace the rear main seal and drive parts. With the engine out, the rear crankshaft seal is easy to reach. Fit a new one, inspect the flywheel and clutch on manual cars or the converter seal on automatics.
  4. Renew the cooling system. Most engine failures start with cooling. Fit a new water pump, thermostat and hoses, check the radiator and fan, and use the correct coolant.
  5. Fit new engine mounts. Old mounts transfer vibration and can let the engine move enough to damage hoses. They are cheap and easy to replace with the engine out.
  6. Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
  7. Replace the rear timing chain if in doubt. On engines with the chain at the gearbox end, chain work needs the engine out. If the history is unknown, replace the chain, guides and tensioner before fitting.
  8. Prepare the turbo. Fit new oil feed and return seals, clean the intercooler and pipes of any oil or debris from the old engine, and prime the turbo with oil before starting.
  9. Code the injectors and bleed the fuel. Enter the injector correction codes into the ECU, check the glow plugs and bleed the fuel system so the engine does not crank dry.
  10. Check the particulate filter. If the old engine failed with oil or coolant entering the exhaust, the DPF may be contaminated. Check its back-pressure before relying on it.
  11. Clean the intake. If the old engine failed internally, debris can be in the intake or intercooler. Clean them so nothing reaches the new engine.
  12. Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
  13. Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
  14. First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.

Tuning and upgrades

Remaps add around 50 hp. The N57 is popular for conversions.

Whatever you plan, start with a healthy engine: a compression test, fresh fluids and the known weak parts replaced. Power upgrades amplify any existing problem.

Questions buyers ask about the N57

What is the BMW N57D30A engine?

The BMW N57D30A is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) diesel engine from the N57 family. It has an inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve layout with a single turbocharger, and makes 190 kW (258 HP) with 560 Nm of torque. BMW built it from 2010 to 2017 and it meets the Euro 5 emission standard.

You find the N57D30A in the BMW F10 530d, BMW F11 530d, BMW F30 330d, BMW F31 330d, BMW F25 X3 xDrive30d, BMW F15 X5 xDrive30d and BMW F01 730d. What we list: BMW N57 3.0 diesel engines for F10, F30, F15, G11 and X-series chassis.

At Autowerke Engines every N57D30A is a real used engine from our yard in Hamburg. Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive. Each listing shows the year, the mileage and the price, so you can compare units side by side.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much does a used BMW N57D30A engine cost?

A used BMW N57D30A engine in our yard usually costs between 2.650 € and 4.200 €. The exact price depends on the year, the mileage and the parts that come with the engine.

Our units show recorded mileage from about 22,000 km up to around 200,000 km. Lower mileage and more ancillaries mean a higher price. Each listing shows its own price, and the price you see is the price you pay. Prices include VAT for private buyers.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. If you order a gearbox or a second engine on the same order, the fee is still charged once.

Inside the EU there is no import duty. For the UK and other non-EU countries, import duty and local VAT are paid by the receiver, and we supply a commercial invoice.

Which cars use the BMW N57D30A engine?

BMW fitted the N57D30A to the BMW F10 530d, BMW F11 530d, BMW F30 330d, BMW F31 330d, BMW F25 X3 xDrive30d, BMW F15 X5 xDrive30d and BMW F01 730d. These cars were built with this engine from about 2010 to 2017.

The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.

Other engines in the same N57 family are the N57D30B (313 HP) and N57D30S (381 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much power and torque does the BMW N57D30A have?

From the factory the BMW N57D30A makes 190 kW (258 HP) and 560 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve diesel engine with a single turbocharger.

Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.

A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.

Every N57D30A on our site lists its year and mileage. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

How do I know a used N57D30A engine is in good shape?

The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

On a diesel like the N57D30A, a careful fitter will also look at the injectors, the turbo shaft play and the oil in the intake before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

What comes with a used N57D30A engine?

Each N57D30A is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.

Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

Is the BMW N57D30A a diesel or petrol engine?

The N57D30A is a diesel engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with a single turbocharger, and it was built to the Euro 5 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

What is the difference between the N57D30A and other N57 engines?

The N57D30A makes 190 kW (258 HP) and 560 Nm. The other N57 engines are: N57D30B with 230 kW (313 HP) and 630 Nm (2011 to 2018); N57D30S with 280 kW (381 HP) and 740 Nm (2012 to 2018).

Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.

This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How long does delivery of an N57D30A engine take?

Orders confirmed before 14:00 CET on a working day leave Hamburg the same day. Later and weekend orders leave the next working day. Delivery to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Denmark takes 1 to 3 working days.

Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Ireland, the Nordics and the Baltics take 2 to 5 working days. Greek and Spanish islands, Malta, Cyprus and remote areas take 4 to 8 working days. The UK and other countries outside the EU are quoted one by one.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

You get a tracking number when the pallet is collected. Check the wrapping before you sign, and note any damage on the paperwork.

What should I replace when I fit a used N57D30A engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Clean the intercooler and the intake pipes, and fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil before the first start, so the turbo never runs dry. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out.

Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.

Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.

The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Does a used N57D30A engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

The warranty does not cover damage from wrong fitting, overheating, low oil, wrong fluids or fuel, engines that were opened or modified without our approval, or labour and towing costs.

To claim, send us your order number, a short description of the problem, photos or a video, and a mechanic's report if we ask for one. If the claim is approved, we repair, replace or refund the engine.

Keep the receipts for the fitting, the oil and the filters. They make any claim quick and simple.

BMW fitted the N57D30S to the BMW F10 M550d, BMW F15 X5 M50d, BMW F16 X6 M50d and BMW F01 750d. These cars were built with this engine from about 2012 to 2018.

The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.

Other engines in the same N57 family are the N57D30A (258 HP) and N57D30B (313 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much power and torque does the BMW N57D30S have?

From the factory the BMW N57D30S makes 280 kW (381 HP) and 740 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve diesel engine with tri-turbochargers.

Every N57D30S on our site lists its year and mileage. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

How do I know a used N57D30S engine is in good shape?

The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

On a diesel like the N57D30S, a careful fitter will also look at the injectors, the turbo shaft play and the oil in the intake before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

What comes with a used N57D30S engine?

Each N57D30S is sold as described on its own listing.

Is the BMW N57D30S a diesel or petrol engine?

The N57D30S is a diesel engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with tri-turbochargers, and it was built to the Euro 6 emission standard.

What is the difference between the N57D30S and other N57 engines?

The N57D30S makes 280 kW (381 HP) and 740 Nm. The other N57 engines are: N57D30A with 190 kW (258 HP) and 560 Nm (2010 to 2017); N57D30B with 230 kW (313 HP) and 630 Nm (2011 to 2018).

How long does delivery of an N57D30S engine take?

What should I replace when I fit a used N57D30S engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.

Does a used N57D30S engine come with a warranty?

Can you check if an N57D30S fits my car with my VIN?

Yes, and it is free. Send the 17-character VIN of your car and, if you have it, the gearbox code. We check the engine family, the build year window and the parts your car needs.

For the N57D30S, we confirm that your car was built with this code or with a version that can take it. BMW used it in the BMW F10 M550d, BMW F15 X5 M50d, BMW F16 X6 M50d and BMW F01 750d.

We only reserve an engine once the match is confirmed, so you never pay for the wrong unit. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

You can also use the VIN check on our site. It reads the year, the make, the model and the engine from the public vehicle register.

What is the difference between the BMW N57 engines?

BMW N57 3.0 diesel engines for F10, F30, F15, G11 and X-series chassis. We list 3 versions: N57D30A (3.0 liter (2,993 cc), 190 kW (258 HP), 2010 to 2017); N57D30B (3.0 liter (2,993 cc), 230 kW (313 HP), 2011 to 2018); N57D30S (3.0 liter (2,993 cc), 280 kW (381 HP), 2012 to 2018).

The versions share the same basic design, but the power, the turbo or injection set-up, the electronics and the emission standard change. The right one for you is the one your car was built with.

The N57 family was used in chassis F10, F11, F30, F31, F25, F15, F01, F32 and F16. Each engine in the yard is inspected in Hamburg. The code is matched to the listing, the parts on the engine are recorded, the openings are sealed and the real unit is photographed.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What should I check on a used BMW N57 engine?

Start with the basics: the engine code on the block, the recorded mileage and the photos. Make sure the code matches your car and the parts you need are on the unit.

On an N57 diesel, a fitter usually checks the turbo for shaft play, the intake for heavy oil or soot, the injector seals and the glow plugs. These parts are easy to check before fitting and easy to change if needed.

Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide. An inspection certificate can travel with the order on request.

Once fitted, change the oil and filter early and drive gently at first. Report any problem right away so the warranty stays valid.

How hard is an N57 Defender swap?

A N57D30 swap into the Defender 90, Defender 110 and Defender 130 is a big job, but a good workshop can do it with a complete kit. Most of the time goes into the mounts, the adapter and the wiring.

The usual steps are: remove the old engine, fit the new mounts and the adapter plate, set the engine in, connect the wiring and the engine computer, then fit the cooling and the exhaust. A test drive and a final check follow.

Our kits come with parts that are made to work together, which saves time and guesswork. What we list: BMW N57 single-turbo and twin-turbo kits for later Defenders.

Before you start, check your local rules for registration and road tests after an engine change. We supply invoices and documents that help with this.

Yes. We sell conversion kits that fit the BMW M57 / N57 / B58 into the BMW F30. The kit replaces the Getrag 5-speed and GM 5L40, and works with the ZF 8HP, ZF GS6-53 and DCT.

You can buy the full package with an engine, or only the parts you need: gearbox conversion, transfer case adapter, clutch and flywheel and propshaft.

A swap like this needs a skilled workshop. Mounts, the adapter, the wiring and the engine computer, the cooling and the exhaust all have to work together. Check your local road rules for engine swaps before you start.

Tell us your BMW F30's year and current set-up, and we suggest the right parts. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

Glossary

  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.

Our verdict

The N57 has a clear set of strengths and a known list of weak points. Check the code against your VIN, ask for compression figures and photographs, replace the known weak parts while the engine is out, and fit it with fresh fluids and filters. Do that and a used N57 will give years of service.
