How to check a turbo

Check the shaft for play: a small amount of radial movement is normal, axial movement is not. Look for oil in the intake and the intercooler pipes. Listen for a rattle from the wastegate when lifting off the throttle.

On a running engine, blue smoke under load points to oil seals; black smoke on a diesel points to boost leaks or injectors.

Looking after a turbo

Let the engine idle for thirty seconds before switching off after hard driving, use the correct oil, and change it regularly. Turbo failures are almost always caused by oil starvation, contamination or overheating.

Every turbocharged BMW engine family

N13

The N13 is a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder developed with PSA and used by BMW from 2011 to 2016. It powered the F20 114i, 116i and 118i and the F30 316i.

It is closely related to the MINI Prince engines, and it shares their known weak points: timing chain wear and carbon build-up. A used N13 with good history is a cost-effective replacement.

BMW adapted the Prince engine for longitudinal mounting in rear-drive cars. It used direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and double VANOS. It was replaced by the B38 three-cylinder from 2015.

  • Timing chain stretch. The chain and tensioner wear, causing rattle and timing faults.
  • Carbon build-up. Direct injection lets carbon build on intake valves, causing rough running.
  • High-pressure fuel pump. The pump can fail, causing long starts and loss of power.
  • Turbo wastegate. Wastegate rattle develops at higher mileage.

In stock: 5 units from 1.213,00 €, median 1.259,00 €.

Full N13 guide

N20 and N26

The N20 is BMW's 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder from 2011 to 2017. It powered the F30 320i and 328i, the F10 520i and 528i, the F20 125i, the F25 X3 20i and 28i, the E84 X1 20i and 28i, and the E89 Z4 sDrive20i and 28i. The N26 is the low-emission US version.

It is strong and efficient, but early engines are known for timing chain guide failures. Because the chain sits at the gearbox end, buyers need to know whether the updated guides are fitted.

Launched in 2011 to replace the N52 and N46 in many cars, the N20 combined a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection, Valvetronic and double VANOS. Production ended around 2017 when the B48 took over.

  • Timing chain guide. Plastic guides in early N20 engines can break, leading to chain slap and engine damage. Updated parts fixed the issue.
  • Oil pump drive chain. The oil pump drive also uses a chain and guide that wear.
  • Electric water pump. The electric pump fails without warning.
  • Oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets. Both leak with age.
  • Carbon build-up. Direct injection causes carbon on intake valves.

In stock: 317 units from 1.330,00 €, median 2.612,00 €.

Full N20 and N26 guide

N54

The N54 is BMW's first twin-turbo petrol straight-six and the engine that made the E90 335i and E82 135i legends among tuners. It also powered the E60 535i, the E92 and E93 335i, the E89 Z4 sDrive35i and 35is, the F01 740i and the 1 Series M Coupé.

It is strong underneath and responds dramatically to tuning, but its fuel system, turbos and water pump have known faults. Buyers should look for engines with updated injectors and good service history.

BMW launched the N54 in 2006 with two small turbochargers, piezo direct injection, double VANOS and an aluminium block with a closed deck. It won International Engine of the Year several times. The single-turbo N55 replaced it from 2009, though it continued in the Z4 and 1M until 2016.

  • High-pressure fuel pump. Early HPFPs failed, causing long starts and limp mode. Updated pumps fixed most issues.
  • Wastegate rattle. Turbo wastegate arms wear and rattle; turbos can also leak oil.
  • Piezo injectors. Injectors can leak; updated revisions are more reliable.
  • Electric water pump. The pump fails around 100,000 km.
  • Charge pipe and oil leaks. The plastic charge pipe cracks; oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets leak.
  • Carbon build-up. Intake valves carbon up and need walnut blasting.

In stock: 232 units from 1.656,00 €, median 3.595,00 €.

The N55 is BMW's single twin-scroll turbo straight-six from 2009 to 2019. It powered the F10 535i, the F30 335i, the F32 435i, the F20 M135i, the F22 M235i, the M2, the E70 and F15 X5 35i, the F25 X3 35i and many more.

It is more reliable than the N54 and still tunes well. Most faults are leaks and bolt-on parts, so a used N55 is one of the safer high-power replacement engines.

BMW introduced the N55 with a single twin-scroll turbo, Valvetronic and solenoid direct injectors. It replaced the N54 and later the N52 in many models. The B58 took over from 2015.

  • Oil filter housing gasket. Leaks oil down the engine and onto belts.
  • Valve cover gasket. The plastic cover leaks and its built-in PCV can fail.
  • Electric water pump and thermostat. Fails around 100,000 km.
  • Charge pipe. The plastic charge pipe cracks under boost.
  • Wastegate rattle. The wastegate wears on high-mileage engines.
  • Oil pan gasket. Leaks on higher-mileage engines.

In stock: 421 units from 1.887,00 €, median 4.025,00 €.

Full N55 guide

S55

The S55 is the twin-turbo straight-six behind the F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4 and the F87 M2 Competition and CS. It produces between 410 and 460 hp from three litres with a closed-deck block and forged crank.

It is strong and widely tuned. Buyers want it to replace a damaged engine, to swap into older chassis, or as a spare for track cars.

BMW M launched the S55 in 2014. It used two mono-scroll turbochargers, an indirect intercooler and lightweight internals. Production ended around 2020 when the S58 arrived.

N63

The N63 is BMW's 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 with its turbochargers mounted inside the V. It powered the F10 550i, the F01 750i, the E70 X5 xDrive50i, the E71 X6 xDrive50i, the F15 X5 50i, the F06 and F12 650i, the G30 M550i, the G05 X5 M50i, the G07 X7 and the G11 750i.

It is powerful and smooth but the early versions have a poor reputation for oil consumption, injectors and heat damage. The TU, TU2 and TU3 versions improved most of these problems. Knowing which version you are buying is the key to an N63.

BMW launched the N63 in 2008 in the X6 xDrive50i with a 'hot-V' layout, piezo direct injection and double VANOS. The N63TU of 2012 added Valvetronic, solenoid injectors and more power. The TU2 (2016) and TU3 (2018) versions improved cooling, oil control and turbo layout.

  • Oil consumption from valve stem seals. Early engines burn oil because heat inside the V hardens the valve stem seals. BMW issued a customer care programme for this.
  • Piezo injectors (early N63). Early piezo injectors fail and cause misfires; updated versions are more reliable.
  • Timing chain stretch. Chains stretch on high-mileage engines, especially with long oil intervals.
  • Turbo coolant and oil lines. Heat in the V damages coolant and oil lines to the turbochargers.
  • Crankcase ventilation. The crankcase vent lines and valve cover breathers fail.
  • Battery drain. The N63 cars need strong batteries because of after-run cooling pumps.

In stock: 231 units from 2.392,00 €, median 5.058,00 €.

S63

The S63 is BMW M's twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8. It powered the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M, the F10 M5, the F06, F12 and F13 M6, the F85 X5 M and F86 X6 M, the F90 M5 and the F95 and F96 X5 M and X6 M, with outputs from 555 to 625 hp.

It is one of the fastest engines BMW has built and also one of the most demanding to maintain. Rod bearings, injectors, turbos and valve stem seals are the known issues, so a careful check of history is essential.

BMW M launched the S63 in 2009 in the X5 M and X6 M, using the N63's hot-V layout with a cross-bank exhaust manifold. The S63TU (2011) brought Valvetronic and more power for the F10 M5. The S63B44T4 of 2017 powered the F90 M5 and F9x X5 M and X6 M.

  • Rod bearings. Early S63 engines can show rod bearing wear, especially with long oil intervals.
  • Injectors. Injectors fail and cause misfires.
  • Turbochargers. Turbos wear and leak oil because of heat inside the V.
  • Valve stem seals. Seals harden and cause oil consumption.
  • Timing chain. Chains stretch at high mileage.

In stock: 167 units from 2.651,00 €, median 12.525,00 €.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
  2. Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
  3. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  4. Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
  5. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  6. List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
  7. Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
  8. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  9. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  10. Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
  11. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  12. Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
  13. Particulate filter and EGR history. Short-trip diesels clog their DPF and EGR systems. The engine may be fine, but ask whether the donor car had DPF warnings, and plan to clean or check your own filter before fitting.
  14. Swirl flaps. Check whether the swirl flaps are in place, blanked or removed. Broken swirl flaps are a known cause of engine failure on several BMW diesels, so many owners fit blanking plates when the intake is off.
  15. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  16. Gearbox-end timing chain. On this engine the timing chain sits at the gearbox end, so replacing it normally means removing the engine. If the chain has not been replaced, the time to do it is before the engine goes into your car.
  17. Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
  • ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.
