Most BMW owners replace like with like. But when an engine fails, some ask whether to change fuel type, and buyers of project cars want to know which BMW engines are the most reliable and economical.

This guide compares every BMW diesel and petrol family we supply: power, torque, typical faults, maintenance needs and prices, so you can choose with the facts in front of you.

Changing fuel type is rarely simple

Swapping a petrol BMW to diesel, or the reverse, involves the engine, the gearbox or at least the bellhousing, the fuel system, the wiring, the ECU, the instrument cluster coding and often the exhaust and cooling. In most European countries it also requires an inspection and a change to the registration.

For that reason, most owners replace the engine with the same type. The comparison below is most useful when you are choosing a car, a project base or a conversion engine.

Diesel strengths

BMW diesels deliver strong low-down torque and excellent economy. The M57, N57 and B57 sixes are among the most durable engines BMW has made, and they are the first choice for conversions into Land Rovers, Toyotas and Nissans.

Modern diesels need longer journeys to keep the particulate filter clean. Short-trip cars suffer from DPF, EGR and swirl flap problems.

Petrol strengths

BMW petrol engines are smoother, rev higher and suit short journeys. The naturally aspirated sixes (M54, N52) are simple and long-lived, and the modern B48 and B58 combine strong performance with good reliability.

Turbocharged and direct-injection petrols need good-quality fuel and regular oil changes, and some suffer from carbon build-up.

M10 (1962–1988)

The M10 is the engine that saved BMW. Launched in 1962 in the Neue Klasse saloon, this cast-iron four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft went on to power the 02 Series, the first 3 and 5 Series, and — in turbocharged form — the Formula One engine that won the 1983 world title.

Versions: M10B16, M10B18, M10B20 and M10B15, from 80 to 125 hp. BMW designed the M10 under Alex von Falkenhausen with a canted block, a chain-driven camshaft and a crossflow aluminium head.

Known faults: camshaft and rocker wear, timing chain guides and tensioner, warped head after overheating, valve stem seals and oil leaks from age. Care: Valve clearance is adjusted cold with eccentric adjusters on the rocker arms. Fit a new spray bar if the old one is blocked or loose.

M20 (1977–1993)

The M20 is BMW's small straight-six, built from 1977 to 1993 for the E21, E30, E12, E28 and E34. It is the engine behind the E30 325i and the economical 'eta' 2.7, and it is why so many people still describe a BMW six as smooth.

Versions: M20B20, M20B23, M20B25 and M20B27, from 125 to 170 hp. The M20 arrived in the E12 520/6 and E21 320/6 as a 2.0 litre with a single belt-driven camshaft.

Known faults: timing belt failure, cylinder head cracks, rocker arm and shaft wear, oil spray bar and cam wear and water pump and thermostat. Care: Valve clearance is set cold at about 0.25 mm with eccentric adjusters. Use a new head bolt set whenever the head comes off.

Full M20 guide · M20 engines for sale

M30 (1968–1994)

The M30 is the 'Big Six', the straight-six that powered BMW's large cars for more than a quarter of a century. It went into the E3, E9, E12, E23, E24, E28, E32 and E34, and its 3.5 litre version drove the M535i and 635CSi.

Versions: M30B25, M30B28, M30B30, M30B34, M30B35, M30B32 and M90, from 150 to 218 hp. Introduced in 1968 at 2.5 and 2.8 litres, the M30 kept its iron block and single chain-driven camshaft throughout.

Known faults: head gasket and cracked heads, cooling system age, rocker arm wear, timing chain tensioner and oil pressure sender and leaks. Care: Valve clearances are set with eccentric adjusters at about 0.30 mm cold. Keep the cooling system fresh and the fan clutch healthy.

Full M30 guide · M30 engines for sale

M40 (1987–1994)

The M40 is the belt-driven four-cylinder that replaced the M10 in the E30 316i and 318i from 1987, then went on into the early E36 and the E34 518i. It is a quiet, economical engine that kept BMW's entry-level cars on the road through the early 1990s.

Versions: M40B16 and M40B18, from 102 to 113 hp. BMW built the M40 from 1987 to 1994 in 1.6 and 1.8 litre form with a single belt-driven camshaft and eight valves.

Known faults: timing belt, camshaft lobe wear, rocker arms and cooling and thermostat. Care: Because cam wear is common, a new camshaft and rockers are a sensible addition when a used M40 is fitted.

Full M40 guide · M40 engines for sale

M42 and M44 (1989–2000)

The M42 was BMW's first sixteen-valve four-cylinder for road cars, and it gave the E30 318is its free-revving character. The M44, its 1.9 litre successor, carried the same spirit into the E36 318is, 318ti and Z3 1.9.

Versions: M42B18 and M44B19, from 140 to 140 hp. The M42 arrived in 1989 at 1.8 litres with two chain-driven camshafts, four valves per cylinder and hydraulic lifters.

Known faults: head gasket, timing chain guides and tensioner, valve cover and oil leaks and plastic cooling parts. Care: Hydraulic lifters mean no valve adjustment, but they need clean oil of the right viscosity to stay quiet.

In stock: 51 units from 1.107,00 €.

M43 (1993–2002)

The M43 is the economical eight-valve four-cylinder that powered the E36 316i and 318i, the E46 316i and 318i, the Z3 1.8 and the E34 518i. It replaced the belt-driven M40 with a chain-driven design.

Versions: M43B16, M43B18 and M43B19, from 102 to 118 hp. Introduced in 1993 at 1.6 and 1.8 litres, the M43 used a single camshaft driven by a chain and hydraulic lifters.

Known faults: timing chain guide rail, valve cover gasket leaks, ticking hydraulic lifters and engine mounts and vibration. Care: Replace the guide rail, tensioner and valve cover gasket before fitting a used M43. It is a small job with the engine out.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. If you order a gearbox or a second engine on the same order, the fee is still charged once.

Inside the EU there is no import duty. For the UK and other non-EU countries, import duty and local VAT are paid by the receiver, and we supply a commercial invoice.

Which cars use the BMW M57D30TU2 engine?

BMW fitted the M57D30TU2 to the BMW E60 535d, BMW E61 535d, BMW E90 335d, BMW E92 335d, BMW E70 X5 3.0sd and BMW E83 X3 3.0sd. These cars were built with this engine from about 2006 to 2012.

The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.

Other engines in the same M57 family are the M57D30TU (218 HP) and M57D25TU (177 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much power and torque does the BMW M57D30TU2 have?

From the factory the BMW M57D30TU2 makes 210 kW (286 HP) and 580 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve diesel engine with a variable-geometry turbocharger.

Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.

A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.

Every M57D30TU2 on our site lists its year and mileage. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

How do I know a used M57D30TU2 engine is in good shape?

The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

On a diesel like the M57D30TU2, a careful fitter will also look at the injectors, the turbo shaft play and the oil in the intake before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

What comes with a used M57D30TU2 engine?

Each M57D30TU2 is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.

Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

Is the BMW M57D30TU2 a diesel or petrol engine?

The M57D30TU2 is a diesel engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with a variable-geometry turbocharger, and it was built to the Euro 4 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

What is the difference between the M57D30TU2 and other M57 engines?

The M57D30TU2 makes 210 kW (286 HP) and 580 Nm. The other M57 engines are: M57D30TU with 160 kW (218 HP) and 500 Nm (2003 to 2010); M57D25TU with 130 kW (177 HP) and 400 Nm (2000 to 2007).

Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.

This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How long does delivery of an M57D30TU2 engine take?

Orders confirmed before 14:00 CET on a working day leave Hamburg the same day. Later and weekend orders leave the next working day. Delivery to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Denmark takes 1 to 3 working days.

Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Ireland, the Nordics and the Baltics take 2 to 5 working days. Greek and Spanish islands, Malta, Cyprus and remote areas take 4 to 8 working days. The UK and other countries outside the EU are quoted one by one.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

You get a tracking number when the pallet is collected. Check the wrapping before you sign, and note any damage on the paperwork.

What should I replace when I fit a used M57D30TU2 engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.

Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.

Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.

The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Does a used M57D30TU2 engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

The warranty does not cover damage from wrong fitting, overheating, low oil, wrong fluids or fuel, engines that were opened or modified without our approval, or labour and towing costs.

To claim, send us your order number, a short description of the problem, photos or a video, and a mechanic's report if we ask for one. If the claim is approved, we repair, replace or refund the engine.

Keep the receipts for the fitting, the oil and the filters. They make any claim quick and simple.

Can you check if an M57D30TU2 fits my car with my VIN?

Yes, and it is free. Send the 17-character VIN of your car and, if you have it, the gearbox code. We check the engine family, the build year window and the parts your car needs.

For the M57D30TU2, we confirm that your car was built with this code or with a version that can take it. BMW used it in the BMW E60 535d, BMW E61 535d, BMW E90 335d, BMW E92 335d and BMW E70 X5 3.0sd and more.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
  • ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.
