Shipping a BMW engine from Germany

How we ship BMW engines from Hamburg: packing, pallets, delivery times, customs and VAT for the UK, Ireland, Europe, the USA and the Middle East.

BMW F32 420i N20B20B Engine 2015

Buying an engine from Germany is common for owners across Europe and beyond: the supply of good used BMW engines is larger here than anywhere else. But engines are heavy, oily and awkward, and they need to be packed and shipped properly.

This guide explains how we prepare and ship engines from our Hamburg yard, delivery times to the main countries we serve, and what to know about customs and VAT.

How we pack an engine

Every engine is drained of oil and coolant, the openings are sealed, and the engine is strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped. Sensitive parts such as sensors and injectors are protected.

The engine is photographed on the pallet before it leaves, and the photographs are sent to you with the tracking number.

Customs and VAT

Within the EU there are no customs duties, and VAT is charged at the German rate unless you are a VAT-registered business with a valid VAT number. For the UK, Switzerland, Norway and countries outside Europe, the engine is exported without German VAT, and import duties and VAT are charged by the destination country.

Delivery country by country

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later.

The fee covers packing on a heat-treated pallet, shrink-wrapping and delivery by a freight carrier.

Inside the EU there is no import duty. For non-EU countries, the receiver pays import duty and local VAT.

The UK and other non-EU destinations get an individual quote for the delivery time.

How fast does my order leave the yard?

Orders confirmed before 14:00 CET on a working day leave Hamburg the same day. Later and weekend orders leave the next working day.

You get a tracking number as soon as the carrier collects the pallet.

Delivery inside Western Europe usually takes 1 to 5 working days.

If you need the engine by a certain date, tell us when you order. We plan the dispatch around it.

How is an engine packed for shipping?

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

Open faces are protected with board and foam, so nothing gets knocked in transit.

Fluids are drained to keep the pallet clean and safe for the carrier.

The photos of the packed pallet are kept on file, which helps if there is ever a damage claim.

What do I need when the engine is delivered?

Carriers deliver to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

An engine on its pallet is heavy, so do not try to lift it by hand.

Before you sign, check the wrapping. If it is damaged, write it on the paperwork, take photos and contact us the same day.

Delivering to a workshop is often easiest, because they have the lifting tools.

What if my engine arrives damaged?

Check the pallet before you sign. If the wrapping is damaged, note it on the paperwork and take photos.

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and clear photos of the product and the packing.

If you got the wrong item or it arrived damaged, we pay the return shipping and put it right.

You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

Do I pay customs or import duty?

Inside the EU, there is no import duty and no customs paperwork.

For the UK, Switzerland, Norway and other non-EU countries, the receiver pays import duty and local VAT.

We supply a commercial invoice and origin documents where they apply, which makes customs clearance faster.

Ask the desk for a delivery quote for your country before you order.

Delivery, warranty and payment

Every engine we sell is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped before it leaves Hamburg. You receive photographs of the packed engine and a tracking number.

Delivery is door to door and included in the price. Most European addresses receive the engine within five to ten working days; Germany and its neighbours are usually faster.

A 12-month warranty covers eligible internal failure when the engine is fitted by a qualified workshop with new fluids and filters. You can pay by card, bank transfer or crypto and receive the invoice by email straight away.

More answers from the Hamburg desk

These are further questions buyers ask us when choosing a replacement engine, answered by the people who check, pack and ship the engines.

How do I contact Autowerke Engines?

You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

You can also use the contact form on our site. We reply during working hours.

For a fast answer about fitment, include your VIN and the engine code in your first message.

Our yard and office are at Andreas Meyer Straße 38, 22113 Hamburg, Germany.

How long does engine delivery to Italy take?

Delivery from our Hamburg yard to Italy takes 2 to 5 working days after dispatch. Orders confirmed before 14:00 CET on a working day leave Hamburg the same day. Later and weekend orders leave the next working day.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

Italy is in the EU customs area for this shipment, so there is no import duty and no customs paperwork.

The carrier delivers to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready, and check the wrapping before you sign.

How do I find the engine code of my car?

The engine code is stamped on the engine block. On most BMW engines it sits on the side of the block, near the base of the cylinder head or by the oil filter housing.

It is also on many registration papers, and a dealer or a parts shop can read it from your VIN.

The easiest way is to send us your VIN. We read the engine code for you and tell you which engine fits.

Never order by the badge on the boot alone. The same model name can hide two different engines.

Can I order more than one engine on one order?

Yes. You can add several engines, gearboxes or kits to one cart.

Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later.

Large orders may ship on more than one pallet. We tell you how they will travel before dispatch.

For bulk orders, ask the desk. We can bundle units and paperwork to make it easy.

Find the engine in the shop, check the code, the year and the mileage, and add it to the cart. At checkout you enter your details and pick a payment method.

After the order, we confirm the unit and send the payment details. Card payments use a secure link that we email to you, so your card number is never typed on our site.

If you are not sure the engine fits, send us your VIN before you order. The check is free.

Once paid, the engine is packed on a pallet and leaves Hamburg with tracking.

Are the photos on each listing of the real engine?

Yes. The photos show the real unit in our Hamburg yard, not a catalogue picture.

Before an engine is listed we check the code, write down the parts on it and seal the openings. The photos are taken at the same time.

If you want to see more, ask the desk for extra photos or a short video. We send them before you pay.

An inspection certificate can also travel with the engine on request.

With a bank transfer, we hold the unit for five working days while the money clears. With USDT or Bitcoin, the unit stays reserved until the transfer is confirmed.

If you need more time, talk to the desk. We are flexible for workshops and repeat customers.

We only reserve an engine once we know it fits, so send your VIN first if you are not sure.

What is the inspection certificate?

The inspection certificate is a sheet that records the unit that leaves our yard.

It notes that the engine or gearbox code was checked against the listing, that the parts were recorded as fitted, that the openings were sealed, and that the unit was photographed and packed with a tracking number.

You can ask for the certificate on any unit in the yard. It is sent with the order confirmation.

Glossary

  • VANOS — BMW's variable camshaft timing system. It adjusts the intake camshaft (single VANOS) or both camshafts (double VANOS) to improve torque and emissions.
  • Valvetronic — BMW's variable valve lift system. It controls engine load with the intake valves instead of a throttle plate, improving economy.
  • Direct injection — Fuel is injected directly into the cylinder instead of the intake port. It improves efficiency but can cause carbon build-up on the intake valves.
  • Wastegate — A valve that lets exhaust gas bypass the turbine to control boost pressure. Worn wastegates rattle and can cause boost faults.
  • DPF — Diesel particulate filter. It traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs longer journeys.
  • EGR — Exhaust gas recirculation. It feeds some exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions but builds up soot.
  • Swirl flaps — Flaps in the intake manifold that create swirl at low revs. On some BMW diesels they can break and enter the engine.
  • Common rail — A diesel injection system with a high-pressure fuel rail feeding all injectors. It allows precise, multiple injections per cycle.
  • Long block — An engine with the block, head and internals but without most ancillaries such as manifolds, turbo, alternator or starter.
  • Dressed engine — An engine with most ancillaries fitted, ready to install with fewer parts transferred.
  • Compression test — A measurement of the pressure each cylinder builds when cranked. Even readings show healthy rings and valves.
  • Leak-down test — A test that pressurises each cylinder and measures how much air escapes, showing where any leak is.
  • LCI — Life Cycle Impulse, BMW's name for a mid-life update. Engines often change at the LCI.
  • xDrive — BMW's all-wheel-drive system. xDrive cars often use a different sump and oil pickup.
  • DME — Digital Motor Electronics, BMW's name for the engine control unit.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC — The immobiliser and body modules that must be matched to the engine control unit on modern BMWs.
  • Rod bearings — The bearings between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. On several M engines they wear and are replaced preventively.
  • ITB — Individual throttle bodies, one per cylinder, used on most naturally aspirated M engines for sharp response.
  • Timing chain tensioner — A hydraulic or spring device that keeps the timing chain tight. Worn tensioners cause cold-start rattle.
  • Rear-mounted timing chain — A timing chain at the gearbox end of the engine. Replacing it normally requires removing the engine.
  • Timing belt — A rubber belt that drives the camshaft. It must be replaced on time to avoid valve damage.
  • TU — Technical Update, BMW's suffix for a revised version of an engine.

Browse every engine in stock or ask the Hamburg desk — send your VIN and we will confirm the right engine the same day.
