N47C20 or N47D20C?

The N47D20C has the same 143 hp as the N47C20, from the same 2.0 L, and was built 2007–2015. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

N47C20 or N47D16?

The N47D16 has 27 hp less than the N47C20 (116 against 143 hp), from 1.6 L instead of 2.0 L, and was built 2010–2015. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

N47C20 or N47D20A?

The N47D20A has 27 hp less than the N47C20 (116 against 143 hp), from the same 2.0 L, and was built 2007–2015. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

Common N47C20 problems

The N47C20 shares its weak points with the rest of the N47 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the N47 guide.

Known faultWhat to check
Timing chainListen for a rattle at the gearbox end on a cold start and ask whether the chain has been replaced.
Swirl flapsCheck the intake for damage.
EGR coolerCheck the recall status and for coolant loss.
Diesel particulate filterRead the soot load and DPF fault codes.
InjectorsRead injector correction values.

EGR cooler. The EGR cooler can leak coolant; BMW issued a recall for some cars.

N47C20 maintenance

  • 5W-30 BMW Longlife-04, about 5.25 litres.
  • Oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.
  • Timing chain at the rear (gearbox end).

Will the N47C20 fit my car?

Will the N47C20 fit my MINI R60 Cooper D?

Yes, the MINI R60 Cooper D left the factory with the N47C20, so an N47C20 from another car is the direct replacement. The MINI Countryman was built 2010–2016, and the N47C20 was produced 2010–2015, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (front-drive or ALL4), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

How much is a replacement engine for an MINI R60 Cooper D?

We have 1 N47C20 engine from R60 donor cars, priced from 1.028,00 €. Delivery to your door is included, and the engine carries a 12-month warranty when fitted by a qualified workshop. Add fitting labour and the parts you replace at the same time — seals, cooling parts and mounts — to estimate the total.

Will the N47C20 fit my MINI F56 Cooper D?

Yes, the MINI F56 Cooper D left the factory with the N47C20, so an N47C20 from another car is the direct replacement. The third-generation MINI hatch was built 2014–2024, and the N47C20 was produced 2010–2015, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (front-drive or ALL4), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

Buying a used N47C20: checklist

  1. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  2. Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
  3. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  4. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  5. Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
  6. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  7. Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
  8. Particulate filter and EGR history. Short-trip diesels clog their DPF and EGR systems. The engine may be fine, but ask whether the donor car had DPF warnings, and plan to clean or check your own filter before fitting.
  9. Swirl flaps. Check whether the swirl flaps are in place, blanked or removed. Broken swirl flaps are a known cause of engine failure on several BMW diesels, so many owners fit blanking plates when the intake is off.
  10. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  11. Gearbox-end timing chain. On this engine the timing chain sits at the gearbox end, so replacing it normally means removing the engine. If the chain has not been replaced, the time to do it is before the engine goes into your car.

Questions about the N47C20

Which years were BMW N47 engines made?

BMW built the N47 engines we list from about 2007 to 2015. The N47D20C ran from 2010 to 2015. The N47D20A ran from 2007 to 2012.

They went into chassis F30, F31, F10, F11, F20, E84, E90, E91, E60 and E87. The exact year of a car matters, because BMW sometimes changed the engine version or its parts in the middle of a model's life.

Each listing in our yard names the engine year, so you can match it to the build date of your car.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What comes with a used N47D20A engine?

Each N47D20A is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.

Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

How do I know a used N47D20A engine is in good shape?

Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

On a diesel like the N47D20A, a careful fitter will also look at the injectors, the turbo shaft play and the oil in the intake before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

Is the BMW N47D20A a diesel or petrol engine?

The N47D20A is a diesel engine. It is a 2.0 liter (1,995 cc) inline 4, DOHC, 16 valve unit with a variable-geometry turbocharger, and it was built to the Euro 5 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

How much power and torque does the BMW N47D20A have?

From the factory the BMW N47D20A makes 130 kW (177 HP) and 350 Nm of torque. It is a 2.0 liter (1,995 cc) inline 4, DOHC, 16 valve diesel engine with a variable-geometry turbocharger.

Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.

A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.

Every N47D20A on our site lists its year and mileage. If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay.

What should I replace when I fit a used N47D20C engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Clean the intercooler and the intake pipes, and fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil before the first start, so the turbo never runs dry. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.

Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.

Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.

The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.
