The engine changed 2 times during the E60 run, in 2004 and 2007. Changes usually come with BMW's mid-life update (LCI) or a new emissions standard, so a car registered early in a year can still have the older engine. The VIN settles it.
Other cars with the same engine as the 525i
A replacement engine does not have to come from another 525i. These models left the factory with the same engine code, so a unit from any of them is a candidate donor once the sump, mounts and ancillaries are matched to your car.
M54B25: BMW E46 325i, BMW E39 525i, BMW E85 Z4 2.5, BMW E83 X3 2.5.
N52B25: BMW E90 325i, BMW E85 Z4 2.5si, BMW E83 X3 2.5si.
How to confirm your engine code
Because the 525i used more than one engine, the badge alone does not tell you which one your car has. The build date is the first clue; the VIN is the proof. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we read the engine code from BMW's records, or look for the code stamped on the block. How to find your BMW engine code.
Known 525i engine problems
M54B25 (M54 family)
The M54B25 in the 525i shares the known weak points of the M54 family. Full M54 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Crankcase ventilation (CCV) | Pull the dipstick at idle: strong suction or a whistle points to the CCV. |
| DISA valve flap | Remove the valve and check for play in the flap. |
| Cooling system | Look for white coolant stains and check the impeller. |
| Oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets | Look at the exhaust side and down the front of the block. |
| Oil consumption from piston rings | Ask for consumption figures; a compression test is useful. |
Crankcase ventilation (CCV). A failed CCV valve causes oil consumption, a whistle at idle, smoke and lean-running codes. It is the most common M54 fault.
DISA valve flap. The plastic flap inside the DISA valve can break and enter the engine.
Cooling system. Expansion tanks, thermostats and water pumps fail around 100,000 km.
Oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets. Both harden and leak oil onto the exhaust and alternator.
Oil consumption from piston rings. Some engines burn oil when rings stick, often after short-trip use.
N52B25 (N52 family)
The N52B25 in the 525i shares the known weak points of the N52 family. Full N52 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Hydraulic lifter tick | Listen on a cold start; a tick that fades is normal-ish. |
| Electric water pump and thermostat | Check for cooling codes and service history. |
| Valve cover gasket and eccentric shaft sensor | Look for oil on the exhaust side. |
| Oil filter housing gasket | Check below the filter housing. |
| VANOS solenoids | Read the VANOS adaption values. |
Hydraulic lifter tick. Some engines tick on cold start because lifters drain down.
Electric water pump and thermostat. The pump fails around 100,000 km with little warning.
Valve cover gasket and eccentric shaft sensor. The plastic valve cover leaks and its sensor gasket fails.
Oil filter housing gasket. Leaks oil down the block and onto belts.
VANOS solenoids. Dirty solenoids cause rough idle and codes.
Symptoms to watch for on the 525i
Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.
Poor low-down torque and uneven idle. VANOS seals or solenoids. The engine may run well at high revs but feel flat and lumpy at low speed.
Limp mode with a Valvetronic fault. The Valvetronic motor, its eccentric shaft sensor or the wiring. The engine runs on a reduced throttle until it is repaired.
Looking after the 525i engine
M54 engines
- Oil: 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01 synthetic, about 6.5 litres with filter.
- Service interval: Oil every 15,000 km or yearly; spark plugs every 100,000 km; cooling every 100,000 km.
- Timing drive: Duplex and single chains at the front, no scheduled replacement.
- Workshop notes: Change the CCV system and DISA valve before fitting a used M54. Both are cheap compared with an engine.
N52 engines
- Oil: 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01 or 04, about 6.5 litres.
- Service interval: Oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.
- Timing drive: Timing chain at the front.
- Workshop notes: Fit a new water pump and thermostat with any used N52; they are on the outside and cheap compared with labour later.
Buying a used engine for the 525i: checklist
- Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
- Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
- Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft sensor. The Valvetronic motor and its sensor cause limp-mode faults when they fail. Inspect the connector and the seal around the motor for oil.
- Plastic cooling parts. Expansion tanks, thermostat housings and water pump impellers made of plastic crack with age. Plan to replace them when the engine is fitted.
- Electric water pump. This engine uses an electric water pump. It fails without warning and needs a diagnostic bleeding routine when it is replaced or the system is refilled.
BMW 525i replacement engine cost
Across 139 525i engine units in our stock today, prices start at 887,00 € and reach 3.112,00 €. The median — the price in the middle of the range — is 1.824,00 €.
Prices depend on the exact version, the donor's mileage, how complete the engine is and the demand for that code. Higher-output versions, low mileage and dressed engines with turbo, injectors and ancillaries cost more; long blocks and higher mileage cost less.
525i engine prices by model year
| Model years | Units | From | Median | To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2004 | 2 | 887,00 € | 1.697,00 € | 1.697,00 € |
| 2005–2009 | 85 | 1.428,00 € | 1.801,00 € | 2.614,00 € |
| 2010–2014 | 45 | 1.421,00 € | 1.890,00 € | 2.226,00 € |
Engines from 2000–2004 have a median of 1.697,00 €, while units from 2010–2014 sit at 1.890,00 €. Newer engines usually cost more because they come from younger donor cars with lower mileage and later updates.
525i engine prices by mileage
| Donor mileage | Units | From | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| under 50,000 km | 21 | 1.421,00 € | 1.824,00 € |
| 50,000 to 100,000 km | 32 | 1.461,00 € | 1.883,00 € |
| 100,000 to 150,000 km | 39 | 1.423,00 € | 1.890,00 € |
| over 150,000 km | 38 | 1.465,00 € | 1.754,00 € |
Mileage matters less than history on a well-maintained BMW engine, but it is a useful guide. A low-mileage unit from a younger car gives you more life for a modest premium.
43 of these come from E60 donor cars, priced from 1.421,00 € to 2.224,00 €. An engine from the same body is the most direct swap because the sump, mounts and ancillaries already match.
On top of the engine, budget for the workshop's labour and the parts that are best replaced while the engine is out: engine mounts, the rear main seal, cooling parts, a clutch or converter seal, fluids and filters.

Engine swaps and upgrades for the 525i
These engines were fitted to other versions of the E60 at the factory, which makes them the most practical upgrades: the body was designed around them and many parts are shared.
| Engine | Factory model | Power | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| N51B30 | E60 528i | 230 hp | +12 hp |
| M54B30 | E60 530i | 231 hp | +13 hp |
| N52B30 | E60 530i | 258 hp | +40 hp |
| N53B30 | E60 530i | 272 hp | +54 hp |
| N62B36 | E60 735i | 272 hp | +54 hp |
Can I fit the N51B30 in my 525i?
Yes, it is one of the more common upgrades. Both are petrol inline-6 engines, so the mounting points are similar, but the N51B30 needs its own wiring and engine control unit, the matching gearbox or clutch, and often a different sump, cooling and exhaust. The gain is 12 hp and 20 Nm. In Germany and most of Europe an engine swap must be inspected and registered.

Fitting a replacement engine in the 525i
- Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
- Reset VANOS adaptations. Clear the VANOS adaptations so the ECU learns the camshaft positions of the new engine.
- Teach the Valvetronic limit stops. Run the Valvetronic learning routine so the ECU knows the eccentric shaft limits.
- Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
- Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
- First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
- First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

What is the difference between the M54B25 and other M54 engines?
The M54B25 makes 141 kW (192 HP) and 245 Nm. The other M54 engines are: M54B30 with 170 kW (231 HP) and 300 Nm (2000 to 2006).
Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.
This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.

A replacement engine is often much cheaper than rebuilding a damaged one, and much faster. The N52B25 you buy is photographed and checked in Hamburg before it is listed.
Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop. Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

Delivery, warranty and payment
Before a 525i engine leaves our Hamburg yard it is drained of oil and coolant, every opening is sealed, and it is strapped to a pallet and wrapped. We send photographs of the packed unit and the tracking details.
Door-to-door delivery is included to the address you give at checkout. Typical delivery takes three to five working days within Germany and neighbouring countries and five to ten working days to the rest of Europe and the UK.
Every engine carries a 12-month warranty on eligible internal failure when a qualified workshop fits it with new fluids and filters. Payment is by card, bank transfer or crypto; your invoice is emailed as soon as you order.
