Common M54B30 problems
The M54B30 shares its weak points with the rest of the M54 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the M54 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Crankcase ventilation (CCV) | Pull the dipstick at idle: strong suction or a whistle points to the CCV. |
| DISA valve flap | Remove the valve and check for play in the flap. |
| Cooling system | Look for white coolant stains and check the impeller. |
| Oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets | Look at the exhaust side and down the front of the block. |
| Oil consumption from piston rings | Ask for consumption figures; a compression test is useful. |
Cooling system. Expansion tanks, thermostats and water pumps fail around 100,000 km.
M54B30 maintenance
- 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01 synthetic, about 6.5 litres with filter.
- Oil every 15,000 km or yearly; spark plugs every 100,000 km; cooling every 100,000 km.
- Duplex and single chains at the front, no scheduled replacement.
Will the M54B30 fit my car?
Will the M54B30 fit my BMW E85 Z4 3.0?
Yes, the BMW E85 Z4 3.0 left the factory with the M54B30, so an M54B30 from another car is the direct replacement. The first Z4 roadster was built 2002–2008, and the M54B30 was produced 2000–2006, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.
How much is a replacement engine for a BMW E85 Z4 3.0?
We have 1 M54B30 engine from E85 donor cars, priced from 2.217,00 €. Delivery to your door is included, and the engine carries a 12-month warranty when fitted by a qualified workshop. Add fitting labour and the parts you replace at the same time — seals, cooling parts and mounts — to estimate the total.
Will the M54B30 fit my BMW E53 X5 3.0?
Yes, the BMW E53 X5 3.0 left the factory with the M54B30, so an M54B30 from another car is the direct replacement. The first X5 was built 1999–2006, and the M54B30 was produced 2000–2006, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

M54B30 prices by model year
| Model years | Units | From | Median | To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2004 | 113 | 1.124,00 € | 1.746,00 € | 4.423,00 € |

Engines from 2000–2004 have a median of 1.746,00 €, while units from 2015–2019 sit at 1.897,00 €. Newer engines usually cost more because they come from younger donor cars with lower mileage and later updates.

| over 150,000 km | 57 | 1.342,00 € | 1.704,00 € |
Mileage matters less than history on a well-maintained BMW engine, but it is a useful guide. A low-mileage unit from a younger car gives you more life for a modest premium.

Buying a used M54B30: checklist
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
- Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
- Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
- Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Plastic cooling parts. Expansion tanks, thermostat housings and water pump impellers made of plastic crack with age. Plan to replace them when the engine is fitted.

Can I put an M54B30 engine in my BMW E30 Touring?
Yes. We sell conversion kits that fit the M54B30 into the BMW E30 Touring. The kit replaces the M20B25, M20B20 and M42, and works with the Getrag 260 and ZF S5D.
You can buy the full package with an engine, or only the parts you need: complete conversion with engine, complete conversion, adapter plate, engine mount, wiring and ecu and cooling and exhaust.
A swap like this needs a skilled workshop. Mounts, the adapter, the wiring and the engine computer, the cooling and the exhaust all have to work together. Check your local road rules for engine swaps before you start.
Tell us your BMW E30 Touring's year and current set-up, and we suggest the right parts. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

Can you check if an M54B30 fits my car with my VIN?
Yes, and it is free. Send the 17-character VIN of your car and, if you have it, the gearbox code. We check the engine family, the build year window and the parts your car needs.
For the M54B30, we confirm that your car was built with this code or with a version that can take it. BMW used it in the BMW E46 330i, BMW E46 330Ci, BMW E39 530i, BMW E60 530i and BMW E53 X5 3.0i and more.
We only reserve an engine once the match is confirmed, so you never pay for the wrong unit. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.
You can also use the VIN check on our site. It reads the year, the make, the model and the engine from the public vehicle register.

What should I replace when I fit a used M54B30 engine?
A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Check the spark plugs and the ignition coils, and make sure the fuel lines are clean and tight before you crank the engine. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out.
Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.
Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.
The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Is the BMW M54B30 a diesel or petrol engine?
The M54B30 is a petrol engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,979 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with no turbo (naturally aspirated), and it was built to the Euro 3 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

What comes with a used M54B30 engine?
Each M54B30 is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.
Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.
Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.
On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

What is the difference between the M54B30 and other M54 engines?
The M54B30 makes 170 kW (231 HP) and 300 Nm. The other M54 engines are: M54B25 with 141 kW (192 HP) and 245 Nm (2000 to 2006).
Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.
This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

How much power and torque does the BMW M54B30 have?
From the factory the BMW M54B30 makes 170 kW (231 HP) and 300 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,979 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve petrol engine with no turbo (naturally aspirated).
Without a turbo, the power builds smoothly with the revs. A clean air intake, healthy ignition and the correct fuel are key to getting the full figure.
A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.
Every M54B30 on our site lists its year and mileage. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

Can I put an M54B30 engine in my BMW E30 325i?
Yes. We sell conversion kits that fit the M54B30 into the BMW E30 325i.
Tell us your BMW E30 325i's year and current set-up, and we suggest the right parts. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.
