The N62B44 is a 4.4 L V8 petrol engine, naturally aspirated, rated at 333 hp and 450 Nm. BMW built it from 2001 to 2005. That is about 76 hp and 102 Nm per litre, a strong figure for a road engine of its era. Within the N62 family, the N62B48 (367 hp) is more powerful, while the N62B36 (272 hp) and N62B40 (306 hp) are milder. It was fitted to the BMW E65 745i, BMW E60 545i, BMW E63 645Ci and BMW E53 X5 4.4i.

What the code N62B44 means

  • N marks an N-series code, the generation of BMW engines introduced from 2001.
  • 62 is the family number.
  • B stands for petrol (from the German Benzin).
  • 44 is the capacity in decilitres, so 4.4 litres.

N62B44 or N62B40?

The N62B40 has 27 hp less than the N62B44 (306 against 333 hp), from 4.0 L instead of 4.4 L, and was built 2005–2010. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

N62B44 or N62B48?

The N62B48 has 34 hp more than the N62B44 (367 against 333 hp), from 4.8 L instead of 4.4 L, and was built 2005–2010. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

N62B44 or N62B36?

The N62B36 has 61 hp less than the N62B44 (272 against 333 hp), from 3.6 L instead of 4.4 L, and was built 2001–2005. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

Common N62B44 problems

The N62B44 shares its weak points with the rest of the N62 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the N62 guide.

Known faultWhat to check
Valve stem sealsWatch the exhaust after a long idle; heavy smoke on the first press of the throttle is typical.
Alternator bracket gasketLook for oil at the back of the valley.
Valve cover gasketsLook for burnt oil on the manifolds.
Valvetronic motors and eccentric shaft sensorsRead the fault memory for Valvetronic codes.
Coolant transfer pipePressure-test the cooling system.
Timing chain guidesListen for rattle on a cold start.

N62B44 maintenance

  • 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01, about 8 litres with filter.
  • Oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.
  • Timing chains at the front, one per bank, with guides and tensioners.

Will the N62B44 fit my car?

Will the N62B44 fit my BMW E63 645Ci?

Yes, the BMW E63 645Ci left the factory with the N62B44, so an N62B44 from another car is the direct replacement. The second 6 Series coupé was built 2003–2010, and the N62B44 was produced 2001–2005, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

How much is a replacement engine for a BMW E63 645Ci?

We have 1 N62B44 engine from E63 donor cars, priced from 5.595,00 €. Delivery to your door is included, and the engine carries a 12-month warranty when fitted by a qualified workshop. Add fitting labour and the parts you replace at the same time — seals, cooling parts and mounts — to estimate the total.

N62B44 prices

Our N62B44 stock runs to 5 units, priced from 3.488,00 € to 5.706,00 € with a median of 5.586,00 €.

Prices depend on the exact version, the donor's mileage, how complete the engine is and the demand for that code. Higher-output versions, low mileage and dressed engines with turbo, injectors and ancillaries cost more; long blocks and higher mileage cost less.

Buying a used N62B44: checklist

  1. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  2. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  3. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  4. Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
  5. Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
  6. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  7. VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
  8. Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
  9. Valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft sensor. The Valvetronic motor and its sensor cause limp-mode faults when they fail. Inspect the connector and the seal around the motor for oil.
  10. Both cylinder banks. On a V engine, check compression, plugs and coils on both banks. Faults on one bank alone are common and easy to miss on a quick test.

Questions about the N62B44

What should I replace when I fit a used N62B44 engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Check the spark plugs and the ignition coils, and make sure the fuel lines are clean and tight before you crank the engine. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.

Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.

Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.

The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Which cars use the BMW N62B44 engine?

BMW fitted the N62B44 to the BMW E60 545i, BMW E65 745i and BMW E53 X5 4.4i. These cars were built with this engine from about 2001 to 2005.

The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.

Other engines in the same N62 family are the N62B48 (367 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What comes with a used N62B44 engine?

Each N62B44 is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.

Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.

Is the BMW N62B44 a diesel or petrol engine?

The N62B44 is a petrol engine. It is a 4.4 liter (4,398 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve unit with no turbo (naturally aspirated), and it was built to the Euro 4 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

How much power and torque does the BMW N62B44 have?

From the factory the BMW N62B44 makes 245 kW (333 HP) and 450 Nm of torque. It is a 4.4 liter (4,398 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve petrol engine with no turbo (naturally aspirated).

Without a turbo, the power builds smoothly with the revs. A clean air intake, healthy ignition and the correct fuel are key to getting the full figure.

A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.

Every N62B44 on our site lists its year and mileage. If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay.

How do I know a used N62B44 engine is in good shape?

Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

On a petrol engine like the N62B44, a careful fitter will also look at the spark plugs, the coils and the timing side before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

What is the difference between the N62B44 and other N62 engines?

The N62B44 makes 245 kW (333 HP) and 450 Nm. The other N62 engines are: N62B48 with 270 kW (367 HP) and 490 Nm (2005 to 2010).

Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.

This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.
