M62TUB44 or M62B44?

The M62B44 has the same 286 hp as the M62TUB44, from the same 4.4 L, and was built 1996–2003. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

M62TUB44 or M62B35?

The M62B35 has 51 hp less than the M62TUB44 (235 against 286 hp), from 3.5 L instead of 4.4 L, and was built 1996–2003. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

M62TUB44 or M62B46?

The M62B46 has 61 hp more than the M62TUB44 (347 against 286 hp), from 4.6 L instead of 4.4 L, and was built 2001–2003. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.

Common M62TUB44 problems

The M62TUB44 shares its weak points with the rest of the M62 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the M62 guide.

Known faultWhat to check
Timing chain guidesRemove the valve covers and inspect the upper guides; replace all guides when fitting a used engine.
Valve stem sealsWatch the exhaust after a cold start and after a long idle.
Valley coolant pipeLook for coolant at the back of the engine and pressure-test the system.
Water pump and thermostatLook for coolant trails at the front of the engine.
VANOS (M62TU)Read the VANOS fault memory.

Water pump and thermostat. The water pump and thermostat fail with age, and the plastic radiator necks crack.

M62TUB44 maintenance

  • 5W-30 or 5W-40 fully synthetic, about 7.5 litres with filter.
  • Oil every 10,000 km; cooling system parts every 100,000 km.
  • Single-row timing chains, one per bank, with plastic guides and hydraulic tensioners.

Buying a used M62TUB44: checklist

  1. List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
  2. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  3. Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
  4. Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
  5. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  6. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  7. VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
  8. Both cylinder banks. On a V engine, check compression, plugs and coils on both banks. Faults on one bank alone are common and easy to miss on a quick test.

Questions about the M62TUB44

What should I check on a used BMW M62 engine?

Start with the basics: the engine code on the block, the recorded mileage and the photos. Make sure the code matches your car and the parts you need are on the unit.

On an M62 petrol engine, a fitter usually checks the spark plugs, the coils, the timing side and the oil seals. These parts are easy to check before fitting and easy to change if needed.

If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay. An inspection certificate can travel with the order on request.

Once fitted, change the oil and filter early and drive gently at first. Report any problem right away so the warranty stays valid.

Which years were BMW M62 engines made?

BMW built the M62 engines we list from about 1996 to 2003. The M62B44 ran from 1996 to 2003. The M62B35 ran from 1996 to 1998.

They went into chassis E39, E38, E53 and E31. The exact year of a car matters, because BMW sometimes changed the engine version or its parts in the middle of a model's life.

Each listing in our yard names the engine year, so you can match it to the build date of your car.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What is the difference between the BMW M62 engines?

BMW M62 3.5 and 4.4 V8 engines for E39, E38 and X5. We list 2 versions: M62B44 (4.4 liter (4,398 cc), 210 kW (286 HP), 1996 to 2003); M62B35 (3.5 liter (3,498 cc), 173 kW (235 HP), 1996 to 1998).

The versions share the same basic design, but the power, the turbo or injection set-up, the electronics and the emission standard change. The right one for you is the one your car was built with.

The M62 family was used in chassis E39, E38, E53 and E31. The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered.

How do I know a used M62B44 engine is in good shape?

Each engine in the yard is inspected in Hamburg. The code is matched to the listing, the parts on the engine are recorded, the openings are sealed and the real unit is photographed. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.

When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.

On a petrol engine like the M62B44, a careful fitter will also look at the spark plugs, the coils and the timing side before the engine goes in.

If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

Is the BMW M62B35 a diesel or petrol engine?

The M62B35 is a petrol engine. It is a 3.5 liter (3,498 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve unit with no turbo (naturally aspirated), and it was built to the Euro 2 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

What comes with a used M62B44 engine?

Each M62B44 is sold as described on its own listing. The yard writes down the parts that are fitted to that unit, such as the turbo, the injectors, the manifolds or the alternator, so you know what arrives.

Some units are long engines with few ancillaries, others are more complete. If you need a part that is not listed, ask the desk. We often have the matching items in the yard.

Every engine is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped, then photographed before it leaves the yard.

On delivery, the carrier brings the pallet to the kerb or a loading bay. Please have a forklift, a pallet truck or an engine crane ready.
