The BMW M2 in the M2 generation (G87, built 2022–) was built with 2 different engines over its life: the S58B30 (510 hp, 2019–2026) and the S58B30T1 (510 hp, 2021–2026).
Below you will find how to identify the engine in your M2, the faults to look for, current prices for a replacement and the swap options that make sense.
- Generation: M2, 2022–
- Body styles: G87 (coupé)
- Engines: S58B30, S58B30T1
- Output: 510 hp
- Replacement engines in stock: 96 from 6.605,00 €

Which engine is in your M2?
| Engine code | Built | Power | Torque | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S58B30 | 2019–2026 | 510 hp | 650 Nm | 3.0 L petrol inline-6, twin-turbo |
| S58B30T1 | 2021–2026 | 510 hp | 650 Nm | 3.0 L petrol inline-6, turbocharged |
S58B30 in the M2
The S58B30 was used in the G87 M2, built 2019–2026. It is a 3.0 L twin-turbo petrol inline-6 with 510 hp and 650 Nm. It has the same output as the S58B30T1, so the build date decides which one your car has.
Reading the code: S marks an S-series code, reserved for engines developed by BMW M; 58 is the family number; B stands for petrol (from the German Benzin); 30 is the capacity in decilitres, so 3.0 litres.
S58B30T1 in the M2
The S58B30T1 was used in the G87 M2, built 2021–2026. It is a 3.0 L turbocharged petrol inline-6 with 510 hp and 650 Nm. It has the same output as the S58B30, so the build date decides which one your car has.
Reading the code: S marks an S-series code, reserved for engines developed by BMW M; 58 is the family number; B stands for petrol (from the German Benzin); 30 is the capacity in decilitres, so 3.0 litres; T1 identifies the version or output stage.

Other cars with the same engine as the M2
A replacement engine does not have to come from another M2. These models left the factory with the same engine code, so a unit from any of them is a candidate donor once the sump, mounts and ancillaries are matched to your car.
S58B30: BMW G80 M3, BMW G82 M4, BMW F97 X3 M, BMW F98 X4 M.
S58B30T1: BMW G80 M3 Competition, BMW G82 M4 Competition.
How to confirm your engine code
Because the M2 used more than one engine, the badge alone does not tell you which one your car has. The build date is the first clue; the VIN is the proof. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we read the engine code from BMW's records, or look for the code stamped on the block. How to find your BMW engine code.
Known M2 engine problems
The S58B30 and S58B30T1 in the M2 share the known weak points of the S58 family. Full S58 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Limited service history | Ask for the donor car's mileage and service record. |
| Oil leaks | Check the head and filter housing. |
| Cooling | Pressure-test the cooling system. |
Limited service history. Most S58 units are young, so few patterns of failure have emerged. History and accident type matter most.
Oil leaks. Gaskets can seep at higher mileage.
Cooling. Check radiators and coolant lines after a crash.
Symptoms to watch for on the M2
Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.
Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode. A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. Check the pipes first, then the turbo shaft for play.
Poor low-down torque and uneven idle. VANOS seals or solenoids. The engine may run well at high revs but feel flat and lumpy at low speed.
Long cranking before the engine starts. On direct-injection engines, a weak high-pressure fuel pump or leaking injector lets pressure drop when the engine is off.
Oil pressure warning or bearing noise at high revs. On M engines, a warning at high revs can be the first sign of bearing wear. Check the oil level and stop driving hard until it is diagnosed.
Looking after the M2 engine
- Oil: 0W-30 or 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01, about 6.75 litres.
- Service interval: Oil every 10,000 km or yearly.
- Timing drive: Timing chain at the rear.
- Workshop notes: Confirm the donor car's accident damage did not affect the engine.
Buying a used engine for the M2: checklist
- Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
- Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
- Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.
- Bearing and valve clearance history. M engines are built to tighter tolerances. Ask for the last rod bearing replacement and valve clearance check, and consider an oil analysis if the engine can be run.
BMW M2 replacement engine cost
Across 96 M2 engine units in our stock today, prices start at 6.605,00 € and reach 15.106,00 €. The median — the price in the middle of the range — is 12.035,00 €.
Prices depend on the exact version, the donor's mileage, how complete the engine is and the demand for that code. Higher-output versions, low mileage and dressed engines with turbo, injectors and ancillaries cost more; long blocks and higher mileage cost less.
M2 engine prices by model year
| Model years | Units | From | Median | To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2015–2019 | 11 | 9.871,00 € | 11.909,00 € | 13.326,00 € |
| 2020–2024 | 64 | 9.594,00 € | 12.035,00 € | 14.333,00 € |
| 2025–2029 | 10 | 9.566,00 € | 12.973,00 € | 14.310,00 € |
Engines from 2015–2019 have a median of 11.909,00 €, while units from 2025–2029 sit at 12.973,00 €. Newer engines usually cost more because they come from younger donor cars with lower mileage and later updates.
M2 engine prices by mileage
| Donor mileage | Units | From | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| under 50,000 km | 12 | 10.088,00 € | 11.790,00 € |
| 50,000 to 100,000 km | 25 | 9.594,00 € | 11.909,00 € |
| 100,000 to 150,000 km | 25 | 9.871,00 € | 12.408,00 € |
| over 150,000 km | 23 | 9.566,00 € | 12.239,00 € |
Mileage matters less than history on a well-maintained BMW engine, but it is a useful guide. A low-mileage unit from a younger car gives you more life for a modest premium.
2 of these come from G87 donor cars, priced from 6.729,00 € to 15.052,00 €. An engine from the same body is the most direct swap because the sump, mounts and ancillaries already match.
On top of the engine, budget for the workshop's labour and the parts that are best replaced while the engine is out: engine mounts, the rear main seal, cooling parts, a clutch or converter seal, fluids and filters.

Will it fit my M2?
Will the S58B30T1 fit my BMW G87 M2?
For the BMW G87 M2, the S58B30T1 is the factory engine and the one to order. The M2 was built 2022–, and the S58B30T1 was produced 2021–2026, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.
How much is a replacement engine for a BMW G87 M2?
We have 1 S58B30T1 engine from G87 donor cars, priced from 6.729,00 €. Delivery to your door is included, and the engine carries a 12-month warranty when fitted by a qualified workshop. Add fitting labour and the parts you replace at the same time — seals, cooling parts and mounts — to estimate the total.
Fitting a replacement engine in the M2
- Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
- Prepare the turbo. Fit new oil feed and return seals, clean the intercooler and pipes of any oil or debris from the old engine, and prime the turbo with oil before starting.
- Reset VANOS adaptations. Clear the VANOS adaptations so the ECU learns the camshaft positions of the new engine.
- Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
- Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
- First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
- First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

Can I put an S58B30 engine in my BMW E92?
Yes. We sell conversion kits that fit the S58B30 into the BMW E92. The kit replaces the S55, N55 and S65, and works with the ZF 8HP and DCT.
You can buy the full package with an engine, or only the parts you need: complete conversion with engine, complete conversion, adapter plate, engine mount, wiring and ecu and cooling and exhaust.
A swap like this needs a skilled workshop. Mounts, the adapter, the wiring and the engine computer, the cooling and the exhaust all have to work together. Check your local road rules for engine swaps before you start.
Tell us your BMW E92's year and current set-up, and we suggest the right parts. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

How do I know a used S58B30 engine is in good shape?
Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.
When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.
On a petrol engine like the S58B30, a careful fitter will also look at the spark plugs, the coils and the timing side before the engine goes in.
If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

Which cars use the BMW S58B30 engine?
BMW fitted the S58B30 to the BMW G80 M3, BMW G82 M4, BMW G83 M4, BMW F97 X3 M, BMW F98 X4 M and BMW G87 M2. These cars were built with this engine from about 2019 to 2026.
The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.
Other engines in the same S58 family are the S58B30T (550 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
