N63B44O1 or N63B44T2?
The N63B44T2 has the same 450 hp as the N63B44O1, from the same 4.4 L, and was built 2012–2018. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.
N63B44O1 or N63B44T3?
The N63B44T3 has 12 hp more than the N63B44O1 (462 against 450 hp), from the same 4.4 L, and was built 2016–2026. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.
N63B44O1 or N63B44?
The N63B44 has 43 hp less than the N63B44O1 (407 against 450 hp), from the same 4.4 L, and was built 2008–2013. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.
Common N63B44O1 problems
The N63B44O1 shares its weak points with the rest of the N63 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the N63 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Oil consumption from valve stem seals | Ask for oil consumption figures and check whether the seals have been replaced. |
| Piezo injectors (early N63) | Read misfire counters and check injector revisions. |
| Timing chain stretch | Read the camshaft timing values and listen at cold start. |
| Turbo coolant and oil lines | Look for coolant loss and oil smoke. |
| Crankcase ventilation | Check for smoke and oil in the intake. |
| Battery drain | Check that the cooling pump after-run works. |
Oil consumption from valve stem seals. Early engines burn oil because heat inside the V hardens the valve stem seals. BMW issued a customer care programme for this.
N63B44O1 maintenance
- 5W-30 BMW Longlife-01, about 8.5 litres with filter.
- Oil every 10,000 km at most; BMW's own updates shortened the interval.
- Timing chains at the front, one per bank.

N63B44O1 prices by model year
| Model years | Units | From | Median | To |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Buying a used N63B44O1: checklist
- Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
- Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
- Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.
- Both cylinder banks. On a V engine, check compression, plugs and coils on both banks. Faults on one bank alone are common and easy to miss on a quick test.
Questions about the N63B44O1
How much power and torque does the BMW N63B44 have?
From the factory the BMW N63B44 makes 330 kW (450 HP) and 650 Nm of torque. It is a 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve petrol engine with twin turbochargers.
Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.
A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.
Every N63B44 on our site lists its year and mileage. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.

Can you check if an N63B44 fits my car with my VIN?
Yes, and it is free. Send the 17-character VIN of your car and, if you have it, the gearbox code. We check the engine family, the build year window and the parts your car needs.
For the N63B44, we confirm that your car was built with this code or with a version that can take it. BMW used it in the BMW F10 550i, BMW G12 750i, BMW F15 X5 xDrive50i, BMW G30 550i and BMW F06 650i.
We only reserve an engine once the match is confirmed, so you never pay for the wrong unit. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

What is the difference between the BMW N63 engines?
BMW N63 4.4 twin-turbo V8 engines for 550i, 750i and X5 50i. We list 2 versions: N63B44 (4.4 liter (4,395 cc), 330 kW (450 HP), 2012 to 2019); N63B44T3 (4.4 liter (4,395 cc), 390 kW (530 HP), 2018 to 2026).
The versions share the same basic design, but the power, the turbo or injection set-up, the electronics and the emission standard change. The right one for you is the one your car was built with.
The N63 family was used in chassis F10, G12, F15, G30, F06, G05, G11 and G16. The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

Is the BMW N63B44T3 a diesel or petrol engine?
The N63B44T3 is a petrol engine. It is a 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve unit with twin turbochargers, and it was built to the Euro 6 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.
