Built from 1999 to 2001, the M67D40 displaces 3.9 L in a V8 layout and is turbocharged. It produces 245 hp and 560 Nm on diesel. That is about 63 hp and 144 Nm per litre, a relaxed tune aimed at torque, durability and economy. Within the M67 family, the M67D44 (330 hp) is more powerful. It was fitted to the BMW E38 740d and BMW E38 740d L.
What the code M67D40 means
- M marks an M-series code, the naming BMW used for its engine families up to the early 2000s.
- 67 is the family number.
- D stands for diesel.
- 40 is the capacity in decilitres, so 4.0 litres.

|---|---|---|
| BMW E38 740d | third 7 Series | 1994–2001 |
| BMW E38 740d L | third 7 Series | 1994–2001 |
In the E38 third 7 Series (1994–2001), the M67D40 powered the 740d and 740d L. Engines from other models fit the E38 as long as the sump, mounts and ancillaries match, which we check against your VIN. All E38 engines

M67D40 or M67D44?
The M67D44 has 85 hp more than the M67D40 (330 against 245 hp), from 4.4 L instead of 3.9 L, and was built 1999–2009. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.
Common M67D40 problems
The M67D40 shares its weak points with the rest of the M67 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the M67 guide.

Will the M67D40 fit my car?
Will the M67D40 fit my BMW E38 740d?
For the BMW E38 740d, the M67D40 is the factory engine and the one to order. The third 7 Series was built 1994–2001, and the M67D40 was produced 1999–2001, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

Buying a used M67D40: checklist
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
- Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
- Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
- List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- Both cylinder banks. On a V engine, check compression, plugs and coils on both banks. Faults on one bank alone are common and easy to miss on a quick test.
Questions about the M67D40
Which years were BMW M67 engines made?
BMW built the M67 engines we list from about 2005 to 2008. The M67D44 ran from 2005 to 2008.
They went into chassis E65 and E66. The exact year of a car matters, because BMW sometimes changed the engine version or its parts in the middle of a model's life.
Each listing in our yard names the engine year, so you can match it to the build date of your car.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
What should I know about the BMW M67 engine?
BMW M67 V8 diesel engines for the E65 745d. We list one version: M67D44 (4.4 liter (4,423 cc), 242 kW (329 HP), 2005 to 2008).
Because there is only one version, the code is easy to match. You still need the engine computer and wiring that suit your car.
The M67 family was used in chassis E65 and E66. Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
What should I check on a used BMW M67 engine?
Start with the basics: the engine code on the block, the recorded mileage and the photos. Make sure the code matches your car and the parts you need are on the unit.
On an M67 diesel, a fitter usually checks the turbo for shaft play, the intake for heavy oil or soot, the injector seals and the glow plugs. These parts are easy to check before fitting and easy to change if needed.
If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay. An inspection certificate can travel with the order on request.
Once fitted, change the oil and filter early and drive gently at first. Report any problem right away so the warranty stays valid.

Is the BMW M67D44 a diesel or petrol engine?
The M67D44 is a diesel engine. It is a 4.4 liter (4,423 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve unit with twin turbochargers, and it was built to the Euro 4 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

What should I replace when I fit a used M67D44 engine?
A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Clean the intercooler and the intake pipes, and fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil before the first start, so the turbo never runs dry. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out.
Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.
Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.
The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Are there other versions of the BMW M67D44?
In our yard the M67D44 is the only listed version of the M67 family. It makes 242 kW (329 HP) and 750 Nm, and was built from 2005 to 2008.
Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.
This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.

Which cars use the BMW M67D44 engine?
BMW fitted the M67D44 to the BMW E65 745d and BMW E66 745d. These cars were built with this engine from about 2005 to 2008.
The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.
The M67D44 is the only M67 version we list, which makes it easy to pick, but the wiring and the engine computer still need to match your car.
