M57D25 or M57D25TU?
The M57D25TU has 14 hp more than the M57D25 (177 against 163 hp), from the same 2.5 L, and was built 2004–2007. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.
M57D25 or M57D30?
The M57D30 has 21 hp more than the M57D25 (184 against 163 hp), from 3.0 L instead of 2.5 L, and was built 1998–2005. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.
M57D25 or M57D30OL?
The M57D30OL has 21 hp more than the M57D25 (184 against 163 hp), from 3.0 L instead of 2.5 L, and was built 1998–2003. A different capacity means a different crankshaft, pistons or head, and different software. It can be fitted as an upgrade with the matching engine control unit and wiring, but it is a conversion rather than a straight replacement.
Common M57D25 problems
The M57D25 shares its weak points with the rest of the M57 family. These are the faults to check on a used unit and on your own engine. The full explanation of each is in the M57 guide.
| Known fault | What to check |
|---|---|
| Swirl flaps | Check whether the flaps have been removed or replaced with blanks. |
| EGR valve and cooler | Check for EGR fault codes and coolant loss. |
| Injectors | Read injector correction values. |
| Turbocharger | Check shaft play and actuator movement. |
| Thermostat and viscous fan | Check the coolant temperature. |
Injectors. Injectors leak or fail, especially piezo versions.
M57D25 maintenance
- 5W-30 BMW Longlife-04, about 6.5 to 7.5 litres.
- Oil every 10,000 to 15,000 km.
- Timing chain at the front.
Will the M57D25 fit my car?
Will the M57D25 fit my BMW E39 525d?
Yes, the BMW E39 525d left the factory with the M57D25, so an M57D25 from another car is the direct replacement. The fourth 5 Series was built 1995–2004, and the M57D25 was produced 1998–2007, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. Send us the VIN and we check all of it for you.

Will the M57D25 fit my BMW E46 325d?
The M57D25 is the original engine for the BMW E46 325d, which makes it the straightforward choice. The fourth 3 Series was built 1997–2006, and the M57D25 was produced 1998–2007, so check that your car's build date falls inside that window. Confirm the drive type (rear-drive or xDrive), the gearbox (manual or automatic) and the emissions standard, because these can change the sump, the flywheel and the software. M57D25 prices
Our M57D25 stock runs to 30 units, priced from 803,00 € to 4.248,00 € with a median of 2.337,00 €.
Prices depend on the exact version, the donor's mileage, how complete the engine is and the demand for that code. Higher-output versions, low mileage and dressed engines with turbo, injectors and ancillaries cost more; long blocks and higher mileage cost less.
M57D25 prices by model year
| Model years | Units | From | Median | To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000–2004 | 5 | 1.078,00 € | 2.337,00 € | 4.248,00 € |
| 2005–2009 | 13 | 803,00 € | 2.521,00 € | 4.108,00 € |
| 2010–2014 | 4 | 1.620,00 € | 1.945,00 € | 2.179,00 € |
| 2020–2024 | 1 | 3.725,00 € | 3.725,00 € | 3.725,00 € |
Engines from 2000–2004 have a median of 2.337,00 €, while units from 2020–2024 sit at 3.725,00 €. Newer engines usually cost more because they come from younger donor cars with lower mileage and later updates.

M57D25 prices by mileage
| Donor mileage | Units | From | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| under 50,000 km | 1 | 2.988,00 € | 2.988,00 € |
| 50,000 to 100,000 km | 3 | 803,00 € | 2.900,00 € |
| 100,000 to 150,000 km | 2 | 1.991,00 € | 2.521,00 € |
| over 150,000 km | 5 | 1.945,00 € | 2.850,00 € |
Mileage matters less than history on a well-maintained BMW engine, but it is a useful guide. A low-mileage unit from a younger car gives you more life for a modest premium.

Buying a used M57D25: checklist
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
- Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
- List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
- Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
- Swirl flaps. Check whether the swirl flaps are in place, blanked or removed. Broken swirl flaps are a known cause of engine failure on several BMW diesels, so many owners fit blanking plates when the intake is off.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.

How do I know a used M57D30TU2 engine is in good shape?
The photos on each listing show the actual engine, not a stock picture. The yard checks the code, records what is bolted on, and seals the openings before the engine is offered. An inspection certificate for the unit can travel with the order when you ask for it.
When you look at a listing, check the recorded mileage, the year and the photos of the ports and the stamp. Ask for photos of anything you want to see closer. Ask the desk for more pictures of any listing. We are happy to show the stamp, the ports and the ancillaries before you decide.
On a diesel like the M57D30TU2, a careful fitter will also look at the injectors, the turbo shaft play and the oil in the intake before the engine goes in.
If the engine fails inside under normal use, the warranty covers you. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

Is the BMW M57D30TU2 a diesel or petrol engine?
The M57D30TU2 is a diesel engine. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve unit with a variable-geometry turbocharger, and it was built to the Euro 4 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

The M57D30TU2 makes 210 kW (286 HP) and 580 Nm. The other M57 engines are: M57D30TU with 160 kW (218 HP) and 500 Nm (2003 to 2010); M57D25TU with 130 kW (177 HP) and 400 Nm (2000 to 2007).
Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.
This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

Delivery, warranty and payment
Every M57D25 we sell is drained, sealed at each opening, strapped to a heat-treated pallet and shrink-wrapped before it leaves Hamburg. You receive photographs of the packed engine and a tracking number.
Delivery is door to door and included in the price. Most European addresses receive the engine within five to ten working days; Germany and its neighbours are usually faster.
Every engine carries a 12-month warranty on eligible internal failure when a qualified workshop fits it with new fluids and filters. Payment is by card, bank transfer or crypto; your invoice is emailed as soon as you order.
