B57D30 or B57D30A?

The B57D30A has the same 265 hp as the B57D30, from the same 3.0 L, and was built 2015–2026. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

B57D30 or B57D30T?

The B57D30T has 55 hp more than the B57D30 (320 against 265 hp), from the same 3.0 L, and was built 2016–2020. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

B57D30 or B57D30B?

The B57D30B has 75 hp more than the B57D30 (340 against 265 hp), from the same 3.0 L, and was built 2017–2026. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Fitting one in place of the other usually means transferring parts and coding the engine control unit, so the simplest choice is the code your car left the factory with.

Common B57D30 problems

B57D30 prices

Buying a used B57D30: checklist

  1. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  2. Compression or leak-down figures. Even compression across all cylinders tells you more than mileage. Ask for the figures, not just a pass or fail, and compare the highest and lowest readings: a spread above 10 to 15 percent deserves a question.
  3. Confirm the exact engine code. Read the code stamped on the block and compare it with the code for your car. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we confirm the match before anything is paid.
  4. Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
  5. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  6. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  7. Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
  8. Particulate filter and EGR history. Short-trip diesels clog their DPF and EGR systems. The engine may be fine, but ask whether the donor car had DPF warnings, and plan to clean or check your own filter before fitting.
  9. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
  10. Gearbox-end timing chain. On this engine the timing chain sits at the gearbox end, so replacing it normally means removing the engine. If the chain has not been replaced, the time to do it is before the engine goes into your car.

Questions about the B57D30

Can I put a B57D30 engine in my Defender 90 L663?

Yes. We sell conversion kits that fit the B57D30 into the Defender 90 L663. The kit replaces the D250, D300 and P400, and works with the ZF 8HP76.

You can buy the full package with an engine, or only the parts you need: complete conversion with engine, complete conversion, adapter plate, engine mount, wiring and ecu and cooling and exhaust.

A swap like this needs a skilled workshop. Mounts, the adapter, the wiring and the engine computer, the cooling and the exhaust all have to work together. Check your local road rules for engine swaps before you start.

Tell us your Defender 90 L663's year and current set-up, and we suggest the right parts. You can reach the Hamburg desk by email at autowerkeengines@gmail.com, or by phone and WhatsApp on +49 15510 030835, Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 CET.

How hard is a B57 Defender swap?

A B57D30 swap into the Defender 110 L663, Defender 90 L663 and Defender 130 L663 is a big job, but a good workshop can do it with a complete kit. Most of the time goes into the mounts, the adapter and the wiring.

The usual steps are: remove the old engine, fit the new mounts and the adapter plate, set the engine in, connect the wiring and the engine computer, then fit the cooling and the exhaust. A test drive and a final check follow.

Our kits come with parts that are made to work together, which saves time and guesswork. What we list: B57 diesel conversion packages for the L663 Defender, including loom and cooling.

Before you start, check your local rules for registration and road tests after an engine change. We supply invoices and documents that help with this.

Which cars use the BMW B57D30A engine?

BMW fitted the B57D30A to the BMW G30 530d, BMW G31 530d, BMW G11 730d, BMW G05 X5 xDrive30d and BMW G01 X3 xDrive30d. These cars were built with this engine from about 2015 to 2024.

The badge on the boot is not enough to be sure. The same model name can hide two different engines, for example after a facelift or a change in emission rules. Always read the engine code stamped on the block, or look it up with your VIN.

Other engines in the same B57 family are the B57D30B (340 HP). They look alike but differ in power, parts and electronics, so they are not always a direct swap.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

See all B57 Engines · Search B57D30A in the shop

What is the difference between the B57D30A and other B57 engines?

The B57D30A makes 195 kW (265 HP) and 620 Nm. The other B57 engines are: B57D30B with 250 kW (340 HP) and 700 Nm (2016 to 2024).

Engines in one family share a basic block, but the turbo, the injection, the sensors and the engine computer can differ. A higher power version often has different pistons, a bigger turbo or a different fuel system.

This is why we ask for the exact code. Fitting a different version can work, but the wiring, the software and sometimes the gearbox must be changed to match.

Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

Does a used B57D30B engine come with a warranty?

Yes. Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop.

The warranty does not cover damage from wrong fitting, overheating, low oil, wrong fluids or fuel, engines that were opened or modified without our approval, or labour and towing costs.

To claim, send us your order number, a short description of the problem, photos or a video, and a mechanic's report if we ask for one. If the claim is approved, we repair, replace or refund the engine.

Keep the receipts for the fitting, the oil and the filters. They make any claim quick and simple.

How much power and torque does the BMW B57D30A have?

From the factory the BMW B57D30A makes 195 kW (265 HP) and 620 Nm of torque. It is a 3.0 liter (2,993 cc) inline 6, DOHC, 24 valve diesel engine with a single turbocharger.

Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.

A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.

Every B57D30A on our site lists its year and mileage. If you want more photos or a short video of a unit, ask the desk and we send them before you pay.

A 12-month warranty covers eligible internal failure when the engine is fitted by a qualified workshop with new fluids and filters. You can pay by card, bank transfer or crypto and receive the invoice by email straight away.
