M51D25 in the 525tds

The M51D25 was used in the E34 525tds, built 1991–2000. It is a 2.5 L turbocharged diesel inline-6 with 143 hp and 260 Nm.

Reading the code: M marks an M-series code, the naming BMW used for its engine families up to the early 2000s; 51 is the family number; D stands for diesel; 25 is the capacity in decilitres, so 2.5 litres.

The 525tds kept the same engine for the whole E34 run, which makes ordering simple: any unit with the same code fits, subject to the gearbox, drive type and sump.

Other cars with the same engine as the 525tds

A replacement engine does not have to come from another 525tds. These models left the factory with the same engine code, so a unit from any of them is a candidate donor once the sump, mounts and ancillaries are matched to your car.

How to confirm your engine code

The 525tds only used the M51D25, but the exact version can still change with the build date, gearbox and market. Send us the last seven characters of the VIN and we read the engine code from BMW's records, or look for the code stamped on the block. How to find your BMW engine code.

Known 525tds engine problems

The M51D25 in the 525tds shares the known weak points of the M51 family. Full M51 guide.

Known faultWhat to check
Injection pumpCheck for smoke and starting problems.
Head cracksPressure-test the system.
TurbochargerLook for smoke.

Injection pump. The distributor pump wears and leaks.

Head cracks. Heads crack between valve seats on high-mileage engines.

Turbocharger. Turbos wear and leak oil.

Symptoms to watch for on the 525tds

Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start. The classic sign of a weak timing chain tensioner or stretched chain. It must be checked quickly: a chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves.

Whistle, loss of boost or limp mode. A split charge pipe, a sticking wastegate or worn turbo bearings. Check the pipes first, then the turbo shaft for play.

Black smoke under acceleration. Too much fuel for the air available: boost leaks, a sticking EGR valve, a dirty air mass meter or a leaking injector.

Hard starting when cold. Glow plugs or the glow plug control unit. On older diesels, also check the injection pump and fuel lines for air leaks.

Looking after the 525tds engine

  • Oil: 5W-40 or 10W-40 diesel-rated oil.
  • Service interval: Oil every 10,000 km.
  • Timing drive: Timing chain.
  • Workshop notes: Check the injection pump and the head.

Buying a used engine for the 525tds: checklist

  1. Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
  2. Ask how the donor car was damaged. Most good used engines come from cars with body damage. A front-end impact can crack sensors, the timing cover or the sump; a rear or side impact usually leaves the engine untouched. The yard records the damage on each unit.
  3. Sump, oil pickup and drive variants. Rear-drive, xDrive and front-drive cars can use different sumps, oil pickups and engine mounts even with the same engine code. Check that the sump matches your subframe and front axle.
  4. Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
  5. Gearbox and flywheel match. Manual and automatic engines differ at the flywheel or flexplate, and sometimes at the crankshaft spigot. Make sure the engine you buy matches your gearbox or that you transfer the right parts.
  6. Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
  7. Injector correction values. On a diesel that can be run before removal, the injector correction values show whether one injector is delivering more or less fuel than the others. Large deviations mean an injector is on its way out.
  8. Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.

BMW 525tds replacement engine cost

We do not have a 525tds engine on the shelf at the moment. Send us your VIN or the code you need and the desk will tell you when the next unit arrives and what it will cost.

On top of the engine, budget for the workshop's labour and the parts that are best replaced while the engine is out: engine mounts, the rear main seal, cooling parts, a clutch or converter seal, fluids and filters.

Engine swaps and upgrades for the 525tds

These engines were fitted to other versions of the E34 at the factory, which makes them the most practical upgrades: the body was designed around them and many parts are shared.

Fitting a replacement engine in the 525tds

  1. Inspect or replace the timing chain parts. Look at the guides and tensioner. On high-mileage engines, replacing them now costs far less than doing it later.
  2. Prepare the turbo. Fit new oil feed and return seals, clean the intercooler and pipes of any oil or debris from the old engine, and prime the turbo with oil before starting.
  3. Code the injectors and bleed the fuel. Enter the injector correction codes into the ECU, check the glow plugs and bleed the fuel system so the engine does not crank dry.
  4. Fill with the right oil and prime it. Fill with new oil of the correct specification and a new filter. Crank with the fuel and ignition disabled until oil pressure builds.
  5. Coding and adaptations. On modern BMWs, the engine ECU must be matched to the car's immobiliser (CAS, FEM or BDC). Reset adaptations, register the battery and clear faults with diagnostic software.
  6. First start and leak check. Start the engine, let it idle and watch oil pressure, temperature and fault codes. Check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.
  7. First 1,000 km. Drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres, vary the engine speed and avoid full load. Change the oil and filter after about 1,000 km to remove any assembly debris.

What is the BMW M51D25 engine?

The BMW M51D25 is a 2.5 liter (2,498 cc) diesel engine from the M51 family. It has an inline 6, SOHC, 12 valve layout with a single turbocharger, and makes 105 kW (143 HP) with 260 Nm of torque. BMW built it from 1991 to 2000 and it meets the Euro 2 emission standard.

You find the M51D25 in the BMW E36 325td, BMW E36 325tds, BMW E34 525td, BMW E34 525tds and BMW E39 525tds. What we list: BMW M51 2.5 turbo diesel engines for E36, E34 and E39.

What should I replace when I fit a used M51D25 engine?

A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Change the drive belt, the thermostat and the water pump seals if they look tired, because they are cheap while the engine is out. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.

Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.

Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.

The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Is the BMW M51D25 a diesel or petrol engine?

The M51D25 is a diesel engine. It is a 2.5 liter (2,498 cc) inline 6, SOHC, 12 valve unit with a single turbocharger, and it was built to the Euro 2 emission standard.

The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.

Diesel versions need the matching exhaust treatment parts on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.

If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.
