S63B44T0 or S63B44?
The S63B44 has the same 560 hp as the S63B44T0, from the same 4.4 L, and was built 2010–2017. Versions of the same size share the block and most mounting points, but the turbo or intake, injectors, software and sometimes the sump differ. Buying a used S63B44T0: checklist
- Photographs from every side. Good suppliers photograph the actual engine you will receive. Look for the block stamp, the sump, the timing cover and any broken brackets or connectors in the pictures.
- Why your old engine failed. Before fitting a replacement, find out why the original failed. An overheating radiator, a blocked intercooler or a failed turbo can destroy a second engine if they are not fixed.
- Look at the oil and coolant. Clean oil without metal particles and coolant without oil are good signs. Milky oil, oily coolant or a burnt smell mean the engine needs further checks before it is fitted.
- List of what is fitted. Engines are sold with different ancillaries: some have the turbo, injectors, manifolds, alternator and starter, others are long blocks. Agree the list in writing so you know which parts must come from your old engine.
- Warranty terms in writing. Read what the warranty covers, how long it runs and what fitting conditions apply. Most warranties require a qualified workshop, new fluids and filters, and replacement of the cooling parts that caused the original failure.
- Turbocharger shaft play and oil. Rotate the compressor wheel by hand. A small amount of side play is normal; in-and-out play or wheel contact with the housing is not. Oil pooled in the intake or intercooler pipes points to worn seals.
- Timing chain noise. Listen for a rattle at the front of the engine for the first seconds after a cold start. On an engine that cannot be run, look at the chain guides through the oil filler or with the valve cover off.
- VANOS operation. Rough idle, a rattle from the front of the head and a loss of torque at low revs point to VANOS seals or solenoids. These are serviceable parts and are easier to renew with the engine out.
- Double VANOS units and solenoids. Ask for the adaptation values or fault history if the engine was running. Solenoids are inexpensive and are often replaced as a matter of course on a used engine.
- Injectors and high-pressure fuel pump. Direct-injection engines rely on high-pressure pumps and precise injectors. Ask whether the injectors are original or updated and whether there were fuel pressure faults.
- Bearing and valve clearance history. M engines are built to tighter tolerances. Ask for the last rod bearing replacement and valve clearance check, and consider an oil analysis if the engine can be run.
- Both cylinder banks. On a V engine, check compression, plugs and coils on both banks. Faults on one bank alone are common and easy to miss on a quick test.
Questions about the S63B44T0
How much is a replacement S63B44 engine for a BMW F91 M8?
A used S63B44 for the BMW F91 M8 costs from about 10.300 € to 15.600 € in our yard. The price depends on the year, the mileage and the parts that come with the engine.
Shipping is a flat 249 € per order. It is added once at checkout and printed on the invoice, so there is no extra fee later. Inside the EU there is no import duty. Outside the EU, the receiver pays local duty and VAT.
A replacement engine is often much cheaper than rebuilding a damaged one, and much faster. The S63B44 you buy is photographed and checked in Hamburg before it is listed.
Eligible engines come with a 12 months warranty from the delivery date. It covers internal mechanical failure under normal use and correct fitting by a qualified mechanic or workshop. Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What should I replace when I fit a used S63B44 engine?
A used engine lasts longest when it starts life in your car with fresh fluids and new seals. Clean the intercooler and the intake pipes, and fill the turbo oil feed with clean oil before the first start, so the turbo never runs dry. Fit a new oil filter and fresh oil of the grade BMW lists for this engine, and refill the coolant with the correct BMW antifreeze mix. Use new gaskets for the exhaust manifold, the intake and the sump plug, and check every hose clip before the first start.
Look at the engine mounts and the clutch or the torque converter while the engine is out. Old mounts can crack a new engine's brackets, and a worn clutch is much easier to change now.
Before the first start, turn the engine over without fuel until the oil pressure light goes out. Then let it idle, check for leaks, and drive gently for the first few hundred kilometres.
The warranty asks for fitting by a qualified mechanic and the correct oil, coolant and filters. Keep your receipts in case you ever need to make a claim.

Is the BMW S63B44 a diesel or petrol engine?
The S63B44 is a petrol engine. It is a 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve unit with twin turbochargers, and it was built to the Euro 6 emission standard.
The emission standard matters for registration and for low-emission zones in many cities. When you replace an engine with the same code, the car keeps the same paperwork and the same emission class.
Petrol versions need the correct catalytic converters and oxygen sensors on the car to stay legal and to keep the engine computer happy. Reuse the parts from your car if they are in good condition.
If you are not sure which version you need, send us your VIN. We tell you the right code for free.

Will the S63B44 engine fit my BMW F95 X5 M?
Yes, if your BMW F95 X5 M was built with the S63B44. BMW used this 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) petrol engine with 441 kW (600 HP) in the F95 X5 M from about 2011 to 2023.
Some F95 X5 M cars were built with a different engine: the S68B44. These look alike from the outside, so check the code on your engine or send us your VIN.
Your car has all-wheel drive or is an X model, so the sump, the oil pickup and some brackets can differ from the rear-drive cars. Tell us the full model so we send the right set-up.

What should I check on a used BMW S63 engine?
Start with the basics: the engine code on the block, the recorded mileage and the photos. Make sure the code matches your car and the parts you need are on the unit.
On an S63 petrol engine, a fitter usually checks the spark plugs, the coils, the timing side and the oil seals. These parts are easy to check before fitting and easy to change if needed.
You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order. An inspection certificate can travel with the order on request.
Once fitted, change the oil and filter early and drive gently at first. Report any problem right away so the warranty stays valid.

Which years were BMW S63 engines made?
BMW built the S63 engines we list from about 2011 to 2023. The S63B44 ran from 2011 to 2023.
They went into chassis F90, F10, F06, F91, F95 and F96. The exact year of a car matters, because BMW sometimes changed the engine version or its parts in the middle of a model's life.
Each listing in our yard names the engine year, so you can match it to the build date of your car.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
Will the S63B44 engine fit my BMW F06 M6?
Yes, if your BMW F06 M6 was built with the S63B44. BMW used this 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) petrol engine with 441 kW (600 HP) in the F06 M6 from about 2011 to 2023.
In our records the S63B44 is the engine for the F06 M6, which makes the match simple. Still, check the code on your old engine or send us your VIN.
Also tell us if your F06 has a manual or an automatic gearbox. The flywheel or the flex plate and some sensors depend on it.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.

What should I know about the BMW S63 engine?
BMW S63 4.4 twin-turbo V8 engines for M5, M6, M8 and X5 M. We list one version: S63B44 (4.4 liter (4,395 cc), 441 kW (600 HP), 2011 to 2023).
Because there is only one version, the code is easy to match. You still need the engine computer and wiring that suit your car.
The S63 family was used in chassis F90, F10, F06, F91, F95 and F96. Before a unit is listed, the yard checks the engine code against the listing, writes down the parts fitted to it, seals every opening and photographs the real engine you will receive.
Not sure? Send us your VIN and your gearbox code. We match the engine family, the year window and the parts on the engine before anything is reserved, and the check is free.
How much power and torque does the BMW S63B44 have?
From the factory the BMW S63B44 makes 441 kW (600 HP) and 750 Nm of torque. It is a 4.4 liter (4,395 cc) V8, DOHC, 32 valve petrol engine with twin turbochargers.
Because it is turbocharged, the torque comes in low in the rev range, which makes the car feel strong in everyday driving. A healthy turbo, a clean intercooler and tight boost pipes are key to getting the full figure.
A used engine reaches its factory numbers when it is fitted with the matching engine computer and software, and serviced with the right oil and filters. If the engine computer from your car is a different version, a specialist may need to code it.
Every S63B44 on our site lists its year and mileage. You can ask for extra photos, a close-up of the code stamp or a short video before you order.
