What is the difference between the Subaru EJ25 engines?

Subaru EJ255 and EJ257 turbo engines for WRX and STI. We list: EJ257 (2.5 liter (2,457 cc), 227 kW (310 HP), 2004 to 2021); EJ255 (2.5 liter (2,457 cc), 195 kW (265 HP), 2006 to 2014).

The versions share a basic design but differ in power, induction, electronics and emission rules. The right one is the one your car was built with, or the one your swap kit is made for.
